Packed And Ready To Go

Off to the Arctic for a couple of days – no politics, no blogging, no InterWebs, only sporadic twitter and email… just a couple of days of R&R.

Let’s Hoist One More For 2009

As years go 2009 was a pretty darned good year, and I’d like to take this opportunity declare it just that – a pretty darned good year. I’d even go as far as to say that it’s been the best year of the 2000’s so far, at least on a personal level.

The political aspects of 2009 have been more than a little depressing for people of my philosophy; all levels of government have gotten bigger and less responsive to the people they claim to represent, levels of transparency and accountability within the elected and appointed branches are at all time lows, our national debt is again on the increase, discussion about any of those matters (and a great many others) has become so polarized that it’s rarely worth talking about them at all unless you are the type who is either happy hurling insults and slurs at your ideological opponents…. or watching and cheering for your side while others do so.

– and, once again, it seems that those who already have acquired more, and for a great many of those who had not even that which they had was further taken away.

But that’s politics, and there’s way more to life than that. I don’t normally talk to much about the personal side of my life here, but it’s the first day of the new calendar year and, since I don’t make resolutions I can post about, I’m going to make an exception and do so because in that arena things have been considerably more positive.

Off To The CAMA’s

Bright and early tomorrow morning I’m on a plane headed for Toronto and then on to Hamilton for the Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards. In addition to being asked to perform Tumivut is nominated for awards in the “Best Female Traditional Cultural”, “Best Group or Duo”, and “Best Rap or Hip Hop Music Video” categories.

CBC Question Period Live Chat

Yesterday I had a little time to kill at 2:00PM so logged in to see what goes on in Question Period live chat hosted by the CBC to see what goes on there – I won’t be going back, I can’t abide echo chambers .

On The Plane – Headed North

Am making a quick run to Iqaluit today to take in a couple of my sons hockey games later this afternoon, watch the torch run, attend the related community celebrations, and hang out with friends for a few days.

As always, I don’t spend a lot of time on the ‘net when I’m home, and the Blackberry don’t work up there – I’ll be back Tuesday evening with some pictures to post, play nice ’till then ‘eh?

Well That Sure Blows

Woke up this morning – felt fine, went to work

A few hours after that – “hey…. where did this naggy sore throat come from anyway?

A few hours after that…. “blech, I’m going home, I feel crappy and this cold clammy (yet oddly sweaty) skin I’ve got probably isn’t a good sign.

How I Spent My Day

– or possibly, why I didn’t respond to any comments today :-)

“Yay For Hot Nurses”

I chuckled when I saw that come across my Twitter feed from @krippl a few days ago; online IRC acquaintance Gimpi was in the hospital and in keeping with his usual sense of humour was making light of things and saying he would only be in for a couple of days.

Cory didn’t make it out of the hospital, and that sucks a whole lot, because despite his challenges he was larger than life in some of the Internet circles I hang out in.

This Week-End Brought To You By The Letter “B”

Really…. it’s a great letter of the alphabet, one of the better ones now that I think of it – here’s why….

Gone For The Week-End

The bags are packed and the bike has a full gas tank — see y’all Monday night or Tuesday

Headed North For A Couple Of Days

– leaving tomorrow morning, Internet connectivity is less than great on Baffin Island and I’ll be busy doing things and visiting people anyway, back Monday evening, y’all have a good week-end.

This Road Trip Done – Another One In The Planning

Made it back to the bunker yesterday evening about 9:30pm – it was a long day on the road made longer because of construction, maintenance, and the general stupidity of other drivers.

12 hour days on the road give ya time to think a bit. I now offer, after watching a great deal of what happens on the roads, the great list of

Signs You Shouldn’t Be On A Major Highway

On The Road

IIn under an hour I’ll be starting the trip to New Brunswick – the tank is full, the saddlebags are packed, as is the tank bag, and the ratty old canvas bag that holds my camping gear bag I bungie cord across the saddle bags….. that thing has been has been down more roads and through more rain and mud than any bag deserves to experience.

I carry a couple of big ‘ole Glad garbage bags in the side pocket to put it in when it rains, – it don’t look pretty like a lot of other bikers gear does but I’ve never minded looking like a vagabond and I like it, we got history, and I know where everything fits into it, so it will have to fall completely apart before I replace it, probably with something else from the salvation Army store.
