Got a picture from Charlotte from when they were at the West Edmonton Mall a while back… doing what they’re doing demands a little R&R and they look like they were having a ball.
I do hope Reno (the guy in the back) forgives me for this — but go ahead and tell me he don’t look like he’s thinking “Dear Creator, I know I haven’t always been as good as I could have been… but I can change… and if you let me live through this I promise I will!!”
I know yer just josh’en Mike but it does lead to a question that I’ve been asked a couple of times the answer is always “no, they are not getting paid”…. and I’m not even sure why people ask it even :-)
Neither the walkers, nor their support team, are on any sort of salary, honoraria, or even a per deim. Monies that are donated go for things like gas for the support van, accomodations when needed, food, medical, and other necessities… parents, families, or friends of the walkers cover the ‘extras’ if they want them although the organizers do make sure that the walkers get some stress relieving, fun type, wind-down time along the way; talking about youth suicide, its affects on others, and their personal experiences with it is a stressful task and it can sometimes get very emotional when they are doing presentations and/or talking to people… the R-’n-R is needed for their mental well being :-)
In other news Charlotte did manage to meet up with her oldest brother at the airport in Saskatoon yesterday, they didn’t have a lot of time as he was headed for Prince Albert but it was really cool that they had a few minutes to catch up.
Yeah, I was just josh’in (and I hope no one jumped to any other conclusion).
I know you’re extremely proud of them, and you have every reason to be. This looks to be a grueling journey, both physically and emotionally. It’s good to see them take some quality down time.
I wish I’d had their sense of purpose and committment when I was their age.
