Jeeze People, Get A Grip Already
He said “F*** Canada Day” not “F*** Canada”
Way too many people are far too wound up about Omar Shaban saying “F*** Canada Day” – really people, give your heads a shake will you…
Shaban is not the only person in Canada who isn’t as enthusiastic about Canada Day as some would have us – my Canada Day post earned me a STFU because I wasn’t either playing the “Ain’t we great !! We live in the best country in the world !!” gig – or failing that, silent.
There’s lots, and lots (and lots) of real things happening that you can, and should, get outraged about, some guy saying “F*** Canada Day” is small potatoes.
If you want to get righteously p*ssed off about something how about we start with the fact that infant mortality rates among Canadian Inuit are reaching the levels found in third world countries like Sri Lanka.
How about thumping your chests at the fact that between 2002 and 2006 the tuberculosis rate among Inuit was 90 times higher than the rate found in other Canadian populations — at a time when the Canadian incidence of the disease has fallen the lowest rate ever recorded?
I’ve got a long list of outrage worthy things – if all ya got on your plate is pathetic moaning about piddly sh*t like somebody saying “F*** Canada Day” send me an email and I’ll be more than willing to send ya some real meat to replace it with.

I had a hard time getting the outrage meter to rise on this one too – I mean isn’t it part of the beauty of this country that you can say ‘F**K Canada Day celebrations publicly and it won’t buy you an indefinite stay in a jail cell?
I hate Canada Day, but love living in Canada. Patriotism makes you stupid.
and even if he did say “Fuck Canada”….who cares.
I think such a statement fuels an unnecessary level of animosity, that’s why it was so high on the outrage meter. People have strong feelings for their country, and it’s strongest on a day like the celebration of our Dominion. Shaban could have found any number of ways to voice his displeasure in the way the current government handles aboriginal affairs without condemning us all.
I disagree. Even if you don’t agree with all that Canada does, you should take pride in its founding and its principles, and celebrate being Canadian. If you dis Canada Day, do you respect Canada enough to want to improve it?
Shrug. I’ll be happy to discuss this with anyone who gets equally outraged with Shaidle’s frequent “ironic” outbursts of hatred for Canada. At least this guy was angry about something worth getting angry about – Shaidle hates Canada for not recognizing her genius.
@nastyboy: Exactly !
Fuck Saskatchewan!
@Throbbin: hehe
@balbulican – This was Dawg’s argument as well, and I think it’s a distraction from the main point. If Shaidle represented an NGO or ethnic organization and made such remarks, the weight would be more heavily evaluated. I don’t think it’s necessary to point out that others have also make disparaging remarks about Canada in order to properly rebuke a person who was being and acting silly.
As I say, there are a thousand better ways to voice displeasure with the aboriginal situation in Canada, and you and stageleft do it quite well here. I haven’t known either of you to make generalizing statements of hatred about our nation, and I’d probably chalk that up to your maturity. Shaban is young and idealistically foolish. In time perhaps he’ll learn to be more diplomatic.
Rebuke? Have you not read some of the commentary? It comes far closer to frothing at the mouth than rebuke.
@Raphael –
I don’t agree with what the kid said and I think the over reaction is silly, but i have to agree with Raph to a point. As a senior memeber of an NGO, he is a representative of that organization and his words have meaning over and above those of a private individual. Like it or not he he should know better and i believe the organization is within it’s right to ask him to step down if they feel he doesn’t represent their views.
