Shorter Conservative Party of Canada
When we do the same things that the Liberals do it’s not really doing the same things that the Liberals do.
The governing Conservative Party has moved to shield its 143 sitting MPs from grassroots challenges to their right to run for the Tories next election. This means incumbents will be automatically nominated as candidates and spared riding-level battles.
[.....]
The Liberals will shield sitting MPs from nomination fights if they can meet a modest threshold for memberships and donors in their ridings.
But the Tories protest against any comparisons with the Liberals, whom they’ve previously criticized for protecting candidates from democratic challenges.

Shameful, plain and simple.
It will also be interesting to see how the Liberals respond to this.
Whooee! As both parties race toward the mushy middle, the old saw becomes even more relevant. “Liberal, Tory: Same old story.”

@Throbbin: The Liberals will say nothing, or next to nothing – given that they do the same thing it would be pretty hard to say anything at all without giving people like me the opportunity to call them hypocrites.
When the party decides that it is going to parachute a candidate into a riding they tell the membership to sit down, shut up, and accept the will of the party – and they do.
When the party decides to protect a sitting MP they tell the membership to sit down, shut up, and accept the will of the party – and they do.
When the party leader decides to eject a sitting MP from caucus they tell the membership to sit down, shut up, and accept the will of the party – and they do.
– the party system is a perfect example of real life herd mentality.
I’m so ready for a slew of “independent” candidates… the current political party lines are coated in such thick bs that I can’t admit to wanting to vote with any.
This just BEGS the question, what the heck does Rob Anders have on Harper, anyway?
