It Died, And Should Have Stayed Dead

So 3 months after the September 22 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center the Liberal government passed some knee-jerk legislation giving the police extraordinary powers of arrest, and compelling people to testify at secret hearings – the law had a 5 year sunset clause that has come and gone, and now they want to bring it back — my question is why?

Exactly what has happened since these laws lapsed that make the government think that they are once again necessary?

The economy went in the shitter on Harper’s watch and he needs a good, scaremongering diversion to enflame the base and rally support so they don’t notice ho incompetent and two-faced his handling of everything has been.

    How’s that?

Whooee! I thought 9/11 happened on September 11th.

One thing that’s happened is the Merkans are gonna shut down Gitmo and maybe dump Khadr in our lap. We’ll need them extraordinary powers so’s we can keep the teen terrist locked up.

Keepin’ 9/11 terrism in the public eye helps keep support up for the unwinnable mission over in Afstan.

I blogged about this myself, here. As I understand it, the Conservatives have been kicking this around for a while. I guess it seems an opportune time to test their coalition with the Liberal Party.

I doubt Harper or Peter Van Loan really think this law is necessary – but it’s always been their intention to make the Anti-Terrorism Act provisions permanent practice here rather than temporary abnormalities forced upon us by the war on terror. And it’s a good time to wave the flag about security, too. So why not a little harmless fun taking away our civil liberties?

Sweetie, it is because the power is now in the other hand. Need I say more?

It is good to hear from you! Glad to see you are still writing. How have you been? I’ve been well. You take care now, and have a blessed day.

The west is at war. I think we need legislation like this to prevent another attack.

Al-Qaeda is providing training, intelligence, and propaganda for jihadist groups with similar goals.

Al-Qaeda is waiting for a spectacular 9/11 like attack, and more Israeli-Palestinian conflicts to revive morale among fellow jihadists around the world.

Massive civilian deaths has not helped Al-Qaeda recruitment.

“Massive civilian deaths has not helped Al-Qaeda recruitment.”

That’s an interesting observation, and runs direcly counter to pretty much everything I’ve read on the topic by pretty much every counter-terrorism author and analyst. How do you support that statement?

  12. Wayne on March 11th, 2009 at 4:59 pm

Mass deaths caused by the wests troops of course help Al-Qaeda.

Mass civilian deaths that are caused by Jihadists do not help them.

@Rosemary – Of course the power now rests with the other hand — but isn’t that hand supposed to value things like personal and civil liberty?

  14. Mike on March 12th, 2009 at 6:35 am

    Wayne,

Linking to far right anti-Muslim propoganda sites does not constitute eveidence or proof of anything. I’d also like to point out that in the 5 years the original law was in place, it was never used. In fact, the major arrests in Canada occurred using the good old criminal code and regular common law.

Sorry, but, as a great man once said, if you give up a little liberty for a little security, you deserve neither liberty nor security. The is NOTHING so dangerous as giving up your freedom to the government. Nothing.

Al Queda are a bunch of cave dwelling fundamentalists idiots on the other side of the world, they are not the bogey man.

Dear SL, Yes, that is what they would like the sheeple to believe. I have an idea. Why don’t we all stop trusting or believing anything BOTH parties say? They are both a bunch of liars and power-hungry animals. It’s time to clear out the Senate, the Congress, and our State governments and fill them with NON-politicians. Would it work? Maybe, maybe not. The real question should be, ‘Could we do any worse?’ lol.

I would prefer people from any means who have at least read the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, the Federalist and Anti-Federalist papers, the amendments to the Constitution, and have a great sense of honor and duty within them. They could only serve 2 terms (1 for the Senate) and then they’d be gone. Hey! That’s it! Two terms only. For EVERYONE! But…isn’t that kind of unfair to the people who are doing a really good job? Argghhh!

I pray your weekend is coming along well. I also hope you start to feel better. I’ve sent up a prayer for your health. Have a great weekend dear.

I have advocated against the party system for years Rosemary, they exist to serve themselves and not the citizen. Once, maybe (and if so it was a long time ago), it might have been different, but these days it’s all about who gets to sit in the big chair and wield the associated power.

    – and the citizen is now a tool to be manipulated, through fear, legislation, and/or propaganda, in the quest for that power. Quite frankly they prefer (IMO) citizens who do not know what the Constitution says, or what the Charter of Rights & Freedom says, because they ignorant are far more easily manipulated than the educated.
