Blogging Industry to call for billion dollar stimulus

Canada’s blogging sector is calling on Ottawa to create a multi-billion dollar infrastructure stimulus package to kick-start the creative-economy and create meaningful distractions for Canada’s growing number of unemployed.

Thursday morning, Canadian Union of Bloggers and Slackers (CUBS) – an industry group representing about 333,000 bloggers – announced they were lobbying the federal government to create an infrastructure stimulus fund that mirrors the $50 (U.S.) plan laid out by the incoming administration of U.S. president-elect Barack Obama.

“Our view is that … the government’s legitimate role in this cycle we’re in is to try and offset the downturn through expenditures,” CUBS president Buckdog said in an interview.

“The government will have to go into deficit to do this, but the government is already in a deficit position. We are in a credit crisis. We are not in a wage and price crisis like the early 80s. There is no way around it – all governments have to spend their way out of this mess.”

But President Buckdog was quick to point out that it is not a bailout. Rather, the government should take this opportunity to invest in new industries.

“I can understand some of this will be seen as a bailout, but I like to see it more as buffering a transition,” he said.

The rest of it is here – go read it and chuckle.

…. is it too early to nominate The Wheatsheaf for best post of the year in the CBA’s?

Whooee! I’m all for it. I ain’t much of a trade unionist type so I figger I’ll just ride on their coat-tails an’ leave all the strikin’ an’ picketin’ with the Dippers like ol’ Leftdog an’ the gathererin’ Wheatsheaf. Clever stuff an’ it fits right in with the idea of a Green New Deal to pull us outta these here economic doldrums.

Franklin D done it in the 30’s an’ I reckon we can take a page outta ol’ FDR’s book. Back then, they built a whack of infrastructure on the public dime and put a buncha folks to work. Some o’ them folks was documentary photographers, like Dorthea Lange. They also put some artists to work on murals an’ other artsy stuff. They built dams an’ bridges an’ highways an’ schools.

The Green New Deal needs to build electronic infrastructure an’ green transportation systems and paperless communications systems(like bloggin’ :) ) and windmills and solar panels and wind farms and solar farms and small-scale hydro-electric on every old dam in every little town an’ burg.

I figger we can make a good case fer compensatin’ us bloggers while we document the course of events. How much d’ya reckon we’re worth per word? I wanna get some extra fer apostrophes.

Can’t we also do “Bloggers for Senate?” We are perfect for the job, after all.

Mark, I’m doing that – go vote. And yes, they’re all conservative leaning except for James, who I think is more of a centrist. These are CPC appointments after all.

Beats the hell out of some of the suggestions I’ve seen – someone was thinking William Shatner would be a good double-whammy (Quebec & the arts in one swoop). I almost cried.

@Candace – Ummmm.. Shatner would be a triple-whammy. Quebec, arts and religious minority.
