It’s Halloween

Let the Christian fundy stupidity begin !!

Well today is Halloween and I am amazed at how many Christians celebrate it in one form or another.

People justify it by calling it innocent fun, or even go as far as “Christianizing” it by having a “Fall Harvest Festival” or dressing up kids in your favorite biblical character.

But when the rubber meets the road, this is Satan’s high holy day.

Satan’s high holy day? }}}}}sigh{{{{{

Once upon a time I might have gone on a verbose rant about such complete and utter ignorance and stupidity – now I just find people like Ray Gano sad, pathetic, and delusional, people who really are not worth the time and effort it would take to set them straight.

So you just go for it Ray, I’m sure Jesus and his pa appreciate your lying on their behalf and will reward you greatly for it.

But if you thought it couldn’t get any more sad, any more pathetic, and any more delusional, hold on to your hat, this one is a real slide.

Looking for something to really scare the pants off of your kids and other loved ones as the Halloween season draws to a close? Drop by your local fundamentalist Christian “Hell House” and find out what torments await you once you’ve died and gone to hell.

Typically orchestrated by church or parachurch organizations, Hell Houses luxuriate in the graphic depiction of all manner of sin – for a good cause, of course.

The cause?

Saving the miserable souls of undeserving sinners who delight in wickedness — like celebrating Halloween.

Yes folks, you can probably look forward to a Hell House (also known as Judgment Houses) coming to a fundy neighbourhood near you within the next few years.

Again, in years gone by this would have provided a great opportunity for a rant but (in truth) I’m starting to get a bit tired of the great ignorance that is out there. An intelligent person will seek to educate themselves, a stupid person will not, and while a good rant might make me feel somewhat better the chances of it changing the mindset of the fundy crowd is less than zero so I’m not gonna bother – they are lost causes, believing whatever they are told by the man at the front of the church, and wallowing in the fear filled little worlds they create.

For those who currently believe this tripe, are still able to think for themselves, and are interested in rising above their ignorance, employ the services of Comrade Google, search on the word Samhain, and look for the work of academics… or (and I just know I’m probably gonna regret this) email me (stageleft @ stageleft.info) and as long as you’ve got intelligent questions you’ll get a reply – stupidity will be ignored, or publicly mocked on the front page depending on how I feel when I read it, as will any and all prayers or pleas for, regarding the state of, or concern for, the state of my immortal soul.

The Hell houses don’t bother me. Churches jobs are to teach moral lessons. You either buy into those lessons or you don’t. Don’t like it, don’t go.

I was on the student association at a Christian Univerity and had to deal with a few Ray Gano’s every time we planned our Halloween dance. They were a very small minority and we just ignored them and told them, if you don’t like it, don’t come. I used to try to explain to them the history of Halloween and how the whole connection to Satanism is a Hollywood construct. They didn’t care. Fanatics never do. We ignored them. They went away. They got to feel self-righteous, we got to have our Halloween dance. Everybody happy.

And the willful spreading of lies and disinformation is all good in teaching moral lessons I guess nastyboy? Speaks volumes about church morality doesn’t it?

    SL

Are all opinions you disagree with lies?

  5. Saskboy on November 2nd, 2008 at 3:23 am

An opinion is that Halloween takes its current form due to Hollywoodization. A fact is that it wasn’t always this way. To say that Halloween is a satanic celebration isn’t just an opinion, it’s factually incorrect (AKA a lie).

“Are all opinions you disagree with lies? ”

Nope. Just the lies. Like “This here piece of bread is actually the physical body of Christ. Not symbol. The real thing.” Or “We hold and teach the ONLY truth. Everyone else who claims divine inspiration is a liar.”

nastyboy: it is Ernest Zundel’s opinion that the holocaust never happened, because it is his opinion is it any less of a lie?

  8. nastyboy on November 2nd, 2008 at 3:24 pm

The holocaust is a historic fact. Anyone who says otherwise can be freely categorized as a liar…and an ashole.

Throwing around words like “liar” in matters of spiritual belief makes me uneasy. Spirituality cannot be measured empirically. I may not beleive in everything Muslims or Jews beleve but I won’t call them liars, because ultimately I just don’t know. Doesn’t mean you can’t have lively debates about it though.

It also doesn’t mean spiritual people can’t be assholes. Assholes cross the spectrum of all world views.

If that’s the case nastyboy you should leave me alone, it is my opinion on this matter of my spiritual beliefs that they are liars.

The pale shell of what is now called Halloween is based on Samhain nastyboy – it is a very ancient event that predates Christianity by a very (very) long time. The church chose to demonize it and misrepresent it because the beliefs, and the traditions, and the practices, that surrounded it conflicted with their beliefs.

Do some research, those are also facts.

If you think back to your Sunday school days nastyboy you will probably be reminded that Satan is a Christian construct …. the people who celebrated, and continue to celebrate, Samhain do not believe in the devil so why would they bother sacrificing anything to him?

Which church? Every church I have ever been to has no problem with Halloween. You’re not lumping all Christians in with the Fundys are you?

Satan is older than Christianity. The Jews had a pretty clear concept of him.

Mooching free candy off of your neighbours is as old as time.

The church as the entity it was at the time, and the organization that continues it’s traditions.

Possibly you should have a talk with your Jewish friends about that one nastyboy, you might discover that’s not necessarily the same concept Christianity has at all.

Long & short: Satan is a Christian concept, they believe he is the fallen one, cast out of heaven for being a bad, bad, angel – is that not the case? What references are there for him before biblical ones showed up with him and his apple?

No doubt nastyboy, but this particular mooching at this particular time of year, can be traced back to an organized event by an identifiable pre-christian group….. that’s another one of them “fact” things.

PS: Did you happen to do any of that research stuff I mentioned… or are you simply willing to take the church elders word for it?

I don’t recall disagreeing with you. But then I try to never let facts interfere with my world view. It makes my nose bleed.
