There are a few folks not so very enthusiastic about our post regarding Stephane Dion and his campaign plane — apparently it’s ok because Dion is “carbon offsetting”.
Me, I’m not convinced.
If you want, rather than me trying to put down what carbon offsetting is, check out the Wikipedia entry on this, my understanding is that it is supposed to be a way of neutralizing carbon output through investment in (for example) clean energy.
However (and there is always a however) unless Dion is able to somehow ensure that his investment results in 8,825 kg of CO2 per hour less emissions (or equivalent) go into the air for each and every hour that his campaign plane is in the air than would have been there had he not generated them - it is not neutral.
Unless Dion is able to somehow ensure that his investment results in 8,825 kg of CO2 per hour of emissions (or equivalent) being removed from the environment for each and every hour that his campaign plane is in the air then it is not neutral.
So how is it being accomplished?

“So how is it being accomplished?”
Not sure but you can bet they’re emptying the grey water tanks over Alberta. And is it just me or does 9.7 tons per hour seem like a bit of an exaggerated measure of exhaust for one plane? Is Dion’s campaign plane coal fired?
