Gustav: That’s Just Gotta Suck

If you follow the track line of what is currently labeled “Tropical Storm Gustav” it ends up in New Orleans, except that I just saw on the news that Gustav is predicted to be a Category 3 hurricane well before it hits there.

And as if it could suck any more than a Category 3 hurricane knocking on the levy levee doors before New Orleans has recovered from Katrina there was also a report on CNN stating there are still some 3,000 of those temporary FEMA type trailers in use.

The Governor of Louisiana has already declared a state of emergency, activated more than 3,000 Louisiana National Guardsmen, put the American Red Cross on alert, and asked the White House to make a declaration of emergency before the storm hits – lets hope ‘lil George is more successful than just getting a nice photo of him surveying the carnage this time around.

This, regardless of how it turns out, also begs the question, ‘should they bother trying to defend New Orleans, and other coastal places at or below sea level?

Britain has acknowledged that they, in the face of rising sea levels, are going to have to abandon stretches of their coast…….

Parts of Britain’s coastline will need to be evacuated due to rising tides, Government’s environment chief warns

Plans to evacuate parts of the crumbling coastline are being drawn up by the Environment Agency, it emerged yesterday.

The agency’s new head – Lord Smith of Finsbury, the former Labour minister Chris Smith – said stretches of the UK coast would have to be abandoned to the waves in the face of rising sea levels.

In his first interview since taking up his role, he said some coastal areas would be doomed, with an additional threat to low-lying areas from rising sea levels.

– how soon in what the deniers continue to describe as the great climate change myth will the same debate begin in earnest on this side of the ocean?

The word is not spelled “levy” but “levee”. One’s a tax, the other is something built to substandard standards by the Corps of Engineers.

Is there a point to this post? I seem to have missed it.

Vonrock: yes, there is. Try reading it again. If the point doesn’t become clear, move on. And don’t feel bad – not everyone has to understand everything, all the time.

Think about it a bit vonrock, there is a tropical storm on the move, predicted to to be a Category 3 hurricane, that is going to hit a low laying area, not too long after another hurricane devastated that same area…. that’s gotta suck, doesn’t it?

There are some 3,000 FEMA trailers in use in that area that are gonna be blown away and/or turned into flying bits of stuff rendering the homeless people who were moved into them after the last hurricane homeless again…. that’s gotta suck, doesn’t it?

And then the big question – should North America bother trying to defend these low laying coastal areas from the sea or just let nature take its’ course as Britain has apparently decided to do?

    – does that make it any easier for ya?

Oh sorry, I was trying to read too much into the story. You guys aren’t very conspiracy minded folks. I must remember that.

Yes, living in a trailer for three years waiting for something to happen, only to have that something be another hurricane has got to suck. Hopefully this time around, things go a little better.

I think that the reality of wether or not it’s a good idea to rebuild below sea level New Orleans is clear. If it were a good idea, money would have been flowing in and there would be a whole lot less FEMA trailers this time around.
