– of what we (laughingly) call democracy

A study group has been set up to advise the Directeur général des élections, Marcel Blanchet, on whether partisan Internet content at election times can be construed as electoral expenditure, and thus be deemed subject to curbs under election laws that dictate how much can be spent on election campaigns and who can spend it.

I’m not tremendously worried about this as it would be impossible to either regulate or control, and I’d like to think that any reasonable court who toss it out at the first challenge were any such stupidity actually (attempt to) come into force - but the idea that something like this would even be considered is a telling sign.

My advice to the good Directeur General is to let sleeping dogs lie - the feds have discovered that they can’t control something as simple as cross country Internet discussion of election results from the east before the polls close in the west so what hope does Blanchet hope in controlling who says what about who on Blogger?
