Blame

One of the most widely held objections to the Prime Minister’s upcoming apology to native peoples comes from folks argue that they personally never oppressed a native person or stole their land, and therefore resent the implication that they have anything to apologize for.

Does it strike anyone else as odd that so many of the folks who furiously deny any responsibility for the actions of their country’s government are the same folk who insist that ALL Muslims, everywhere, should be forced to accept responsibility for the actions of a handful of Islamist criminals on 9/11?

Curious, that.

    Yeah, but c’mon, they’re muslims.

    Hmm. Hadn’t thought of that.

    Excellent question!

What’s more, we’ve been shown exactly zero evidence that this “handful of Islamists” had anything to do with 9/11. Given what we know about the US govt right now – how truthful, moral and trustworthy they’ve been! – why should we take their word for it? I don’t think we should accept their explanation for the singular event that they’ve used to justify their entire authoritarian, murderous agenda.

    Spooky.

balbulican, I’ve come over here to tell you that my opening sentence contained a typo and thus reversed the meaning of it.

And to reply to your post, I don’t think we should be apologizing to the natives any more than the Muslims in your analogy should apologize to America.

Can you enumerate a list of actual people in that “so many folks” set, or is it just an empty rhetorical phrase?

  7. balbulican on June 11th, 2008 at 6:55 pm

    Yes. No.

Fine. Let’s hear it. I’m curious to see where “many” starts in your conception of the set of integers.

    Nah. Go look for yourself.

I don’t think we should be apologizing to the natives any more than the Muslims in your analogy should apologize to America.

*We* are not making personal apologies. This is an apology from the Canadian Government, a corporate entity that has existed, in its present form since for close to 150 years and which is responsible for these abuses.

The utter conceit of little children thinking this is about them, necessarily, is astonishing.

Be quiet already. No one cares how you personally think or feel about this; your emotional state is worth exactly nothing.
