The City Council of Nanaimo BC is exploring the option of Internet voting in the next municipal elections. I wonder if they’re willing to expand that to allowing residents to vote via the Internet on actual municipal issues, as opposed to just choosing who decides on the issues on their behalf?
That would be something approaching real democracy wouldn’t it….. which means it won’t happen.

Municipal referendums used to be a grand old tradition, but they haven’t gone away. Recently, residents in Toronto’s Junction/Slaughterhouse area voted whether to remove the neighbourhood’s sixty-year-old “dry” status (they voted Yes, I believe).
