One More Middle Aged Guy decided to take a CTV Newsnet news reader, and the Canadian public education system, to task today over some math skills, or lack there of as the case is.
” Reports are that the sink hole is over two football fields across. For those of you doing the math … that’s close to 500 meters in CIRCUMFERENCE !! ” Breathlessly she smirks with her display of superior knowledge in simple geometry.
Obviously a product of our Canadian public education system this bright light of knowledge and mathematical skill offers her wisdom at least three times today!
Got news for you sweet heart!
For those of us who actually CAN do the grade 6 math it’s ….
First of all two football fields = 600 yards which equals 584 meters.
That would be the DIAMETER of the sink hole.
The CIRCUMFERENCE would be 584 TIMES 3.14 = 1833 meters( remember pi* D = C ? eh Kate ? )
Now why don’t you explain to us your thoughts on economic policy ??
Or go ask Jeff the weatherman …. I’m pretty sure he can do grade 6 math … at least he could in high school !
The regulation Canadian football field is 150 yards from end to end. 110 yards of playing field, 2 end zones of 20 yards each, and 65 yards of lateral playing space, I’m not sure what sort of creative math is required to reach 600 using 2 football fields and any of those numbers but it’s gotta be good.
End to end two football fields would be 300 yards, or 274.32 metres. If OMMAG’s formula is correct (and given the circumstances I probably should check) the circumference of the hole would then be 861.3648 metres as opposed to the 1833 metres he worked it out to be…. quite a difference isn’t it?
With those sorts of skillz OMMAG probably shouldn’t be looking for a colour commentator job with the CFL, and I certainly wouldn’t want him mucking about with national economics, but CPoC Election Finance HQ might want him.
