Further to my last post on this stupidity, additional information comes to light regarding new laws concerning cell phone use in the nanny state across the river.

The CBC was discussing this the other night and two new bits of information came to light.

The first is that according to the ‘you can’t safely use a cell phone and drive‘ crowd and a study they were quoting, it does not matter whether you are using a hand held, or hands free, phone - the simple act of holding a conversation while driving is what causes the distraction.

So there you have it, cell phone use is not the problem folks, talking and driving is. See my previous post where I asked

The rational behind the Quebec law is that “It’s distracting” - my cell phone usage is no more distracting that holding a conversation with a passenger while drinking a coffee or having a smoke - so which of those distractions will they outlaw next?

If it is “the conversation” itself that causes the distraction, and it does not matter whether both hands are on the steering wheel or not, what “distraction” is next?

Talking to a passenger? Singing along with whatever is on the MP3 player?

The other little tid-bit of information that came to light on the CBC segment is that the SQ will not have to see you actually using your cell phone while driving, all they need to do is see a cell phone in your hand while you are driving - holding your cell phone while driving is now an offence in the province Quebec.

What’s next? Your cup of coffee? Your cigarette?

When the weather is a bit warmer me thinks I’ll take a stroll over the bridge and see if I can find a friendly agent de police to help me across the street.
