Eh … Close Enough

Genesis 19:24-28: (24) Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven; (25) And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground. (28) And he [Abraham] looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace.

Researchers: Asteroid Destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah

A clay tablet that has baffled scientists for 150 years has been identified as a witness’s account of the asteroid suspected of being behind the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.

[.....]

Mark Hempsell, one of the researchers from Bristol University who cracked the tablet’s code, said: “It’s a wonderful piece of observation, an absolutely perfect piece of science.”

It would appear to prove that the biblical account of the destruction of Sodom & Gomorrah has been scientifically proven.

Well, not necessarily proven, but this find, if it does indeed hold up, would certainly add a separate, independant, witness for confirmation, which is always a good thing when viewing historical accounts.

I would like to read about more geological research confirming such an asteroid strike in the region. The size posited in the article would have had a HUGE effect, and so much more evidence ought to be forthcoming (of course, a much smaller meteor shower–still of substantial sized material–could better match the Genesis account. We’ll just have to see what shakes out).

So far, biblical accounts, as my old (now deceased) M.E. archeology prof was wont to say, have held up very well to archaeological evidence. Haven’t subscribed to BAR for a number of years, now, but that had seemed to be the case as long as I followed the field at once-twice-thrice remove.

    Ahem.

Let’s see, given that this report came out in the Times of London, and London is five hours ahead of us, that puts them in… (counts fingers) April 1st.

    Hmm…
