The Right To Bear Arms

It’s really no wonder the Americans haven’t been able to settle their Second Amendment debate about the “right to bear arms” - even their government doesn’t seem to know which version of the texts available to them should be used….. something you’d think at least one or two of the dim political bulbs down there would actually want to settle on.

According to the Wikipedia the Second Amendment, as passed by the House and Senate, reads:

“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

But the original and [the] copies distributed to the states, and then ratified by them, had different capitalization and punctuation:

“A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”

The Wikipedia goes on to say that

Both versions are commonly used in official government publications. The original hand-written copy of the Bill of Rights, approved by the House and Senate, was prepared by scribe William Lambert and hangs in the National Archives.

Come on guys, figure it out already will ya?

– and if it takes a national referendum then get on with it, some of us are interested in seeing how a democracy might work.
