Hillary Done Good Last Night

Three (Ohio, Texas, and Rhode Island) out of four ain’t bad is it? Although she (apparently) didn’t make up any significant delegate ground going into the next round of primaries with that sort of recent record ain’t gonna hurt – the question is, who gave her the boost? Democrats or the Republicans?

Yesterday on American News/Talk radio I heard a couple of the bigger talking heads (Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh) encouraging Republicans to switch sides for the night and vote for Hillary Clinton because they

(a) want the Clinton/Obama mudslinging to continue as long as possible, and

(b) seem to think that McCain will have an easier time beating Clinton than he will beating Obama.

– and if callers to these shows are any indicator of what took place Republicans did in fact turn out last night and vote for Hillary Clinton in aid of those goals.

This makes me happy.

Not because I sympathize with the conservative news/talk radio talking heads, not because I like the Clinton/Obama mudslinging (although I must admit that it is somewhat entertaining), and not because Hillary Clinton gets to hang around for a while longer and has a (very slim) chance of gaining the Democrat nomination…. no, no, no…. that’s not the reason at all.

– and it does not make me happy because Democrats are getting back some of what they have also done in the past, and probably in this election as well – that’s not it either.

No my friends, I am happy because these tactics are making both Democrats and Republicans unhappy, yes dear reader friends, there is more, and even growing, disillusionment with the process happening south of the border…. American democracy is being perverted they say — and as much fun as that is, it gets better still.

How could that be you may ask, well (since you did ask), dogmatic partisans are turning on each other (oh be still my beating heart). That’s right, dogmatic Republicans are getting angry at dogmatic Republicans who voted for Hillary, evangelical type Republicans who would rather that vote go towards Huckabee are unhappy… and state issue type Republicans who think that other matters on the Republican ballot last night were more deserving of attention are unhappy – it’s great ain’t it?

Don’t election campaigns just bring out the best in everybody?

Head over to Kate’s where today she somehow used Clinton’s win to turn it into blaming them for 9/11. It’s a fascinating piece of dishonesty. Perhaps among the best dishonesty I’ve seen for a long while.

I feel sorry for the poor URQ bloggers now.

The Republican strategy, articulated quite clearly in a Harper’s Forum some months ago, was to attack each successive Democratic Front runner with a horrified “Oh, NO, They Can’t Be SERIOUS, ANYBODY but HIM/HER!!” The problem is, you can only do that a couple of times before it becomes obvious that you’re simply serial sliming.

When Clinton looked like a shoo-in and Obama seemed slated to be a heroic third or fourth place, Clinton was, of course, the WORST POSSIBLE CHOICE. When Obama surged, we saw the URQs move smoothly into “PLEASE NO NOT HIM”, “EVEN HILLARY WAS A BETTER ALTERNATIVE”, “A VOTE FOR OBAMA IS A VOTE FOR OSAMA”, and all that crap. If they have to reverse themselves once again, they’re going to look even sillier than they already do.

Only to us, of course. Their loyal readership doesn’t seem to notice that kind of thing.

Chat transcript: Wayne Slater on the Texas primaries

DwayneH: Gromer Jeffers says that the Talk Radio Hosts were among the losers, but Talk Radio helped provide the Hillary with the margin of victory.

Wayne Slater: No question that the effort by conservative talk radio to have Republicans cross over and vote for Hillary Clinton had some impact. Of the early vote, some voters — perhaps 8-9 percent in some places — were people with a history of voting in Republican primaries in the past. And I’ve gotten anecdotal evidence of Republicans voting int he Republican primary. With the final spread between Obama and Clinton about 100,000 out of 1.8 votes cast, every vote counts. But whether these Republican cross overs actually produced the Hillary victory is debatable, I think.
