Because They Work So Hard
Members of Parliament are getting a pay raise.
A memo Commons Speaker Peter Milliken sent to all MPs outlines the automatic pay hike of 3.1 per cent on April 1st.
The minimum salary for all 308 MPs will jump to $155,400. More than half of Federal MPs receive salary top-ups for additional house and caucus duties.
As of April 1st, the Prime Minister will receive an additional $155,400, House Leaders earn an extra $38,600 and chairs of House of Commons committees get $11-thousand.(emphasis mine)
Watch Question Period in the House today and then come back and tell us if you think they deserve this.

It’s rather fitting that the pay raise kicks in on April 1st. It certainly makes me feel the fool.
[...] negative Nellies think our MPs don’t deserve this extra [...]
Kind of makes a mockery of the term civil “Servant” doesn’t it? Our politicians are now in NHL hockey player range and closing in fast. Who knew that blowing hot air and dithering on policy was so lucrative. And all those Liberals earning $155k to sit on their hands… now THAT’s effective government.
$155,400 isn’t that much. Most journeymen tradesmen in I know make 6 figures a year depending on how much they want to work.
Oh come on now, nastyboy. I know lots of tradespeople too, and most unions cap their hours at 37.5. Companies are unwilling to pay overtime unless it’s a government project. And if you do know who is making $100,000 in the trades, drop me a line and give me their number. I used to do a little carpentry, lol.

Come to AB. The journeyman rate is around 37.5 but pretty much every major project is running 24/7. Most guys pulling at least 20-30 hours OT at 1.5 and double time, and they still can’t man the projects.
Jump on the gravy train before it crashes. The only downside is that you have to come to Alberta.
People get too preoccupied over what MP’s make. Is it fair compared to what a Day Care worker makes? No. But it’s a heck of a lot less thean the average CEO and there are more of them then there are MP’s.
What really bothers me is the tax breaks they are afforded that the average joe isn’t allowed to utilize. I’m still waiting for someone to challenge that in court. I’d do it, but if the CRA ever took a look at my books I’m probably headed to pound-me-in-the-ass prison. They’d eat a pretty boy like me alive.
