The big powers last night agreed the contents of a draft UN resolution that would tighten existing financial and travel sanctions against Iran in the hope of coercing Tehran into halting its sensitive activities that could eventually lead to a nuclear bomb.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad cares so much for the Iranian people that he’ll immediately, if not sooner, cave to UN Security Council demands that may, even if ever so slightly, have any sort of negative impact on the life, wealth, or happiness, of those people.

Right?

…. is it really necessary to put a [/sarcasm] after that?

Well actually yes and no. It did stop his nuclear weapons and WMD program, but no it didn’t because he never did cave the the UN or thte US, clung to power and stubbornly allowed the WMD myth to float, mostly to scare his enemies like Iran into NOT invading (cuz they remember mustard gas attacks and the US didn’t).

I would rely more on the fact the the CIA, having been thrown under the bus by the Bushies on this once already, are reporting there is no weapons program and thus no need for sanctions anyway.

Sanctions against North Korea are also working, Jong Ill has been turned into a quivering mass of poorly dressed dictator because he has been unable to obtain an iPod from anywhere - the man got so bored he looked in a mirror, discovered he had a really bad hair cut, and fell to the floor in tears where he remains to this very day.

Mike, yes, the longer answer is that sanctions crippled Iraq. The country Iraq, not Saddam Hussein. He still enjoyed all the fineries of dictatorship. Any talk of sanctions against Iran is silly anyway, with Russia and China being large trading partners.

Well Raph, I assume the sanctions would be aimed at Iran the country, as Ahmadinejad doesn’t build nukes nor could he order their use anyway.

I think we should also remember that Ahmadinejad was elected in 2003, unlike Saddam. And could face electoral defeat again, since he appears to be fairly unpopular in Iran right now.

Iranians have the opportunity to get rid of Onomatopoeia, The west still have to deal with those prick Ayatollah’s though. They run the country.
