How Is That Going To Help?

In the wake of a shooting in Toronto the mayor has called for a ban on handguns guns

“Handguns need to be banned period. No exemptions. No collectors. No loopholes. Ban them,” said Toronto Mayor David Miller.

Does anyone seriously think that the gangs will stop using handguns if they are made illegal?

What magic wand does the mayor think can be waved so that in one great national puff of smoke all the handguns in Canada disappear?

– and what magic wall will he order built to stop any more from entering the country?

Banning handguns will not solve the problem of illegal handgun crime.

Maybe this is what he is on about.

“A handgun allegedly connected to the shooting was registered to one of the accused who is reportedly a member of a gun club.”

Even if that all proves to be true, I still agree with you that a ban on handguns would have little or no effect.
What we need is a ban on the wankers that use guns to intimidate, rob and murder other people.
Mandatory minimum sentencing for the use or possession of guns to commit crimes and for smuggling and selling illegal guns.
Deport non citizens convicted of gun related crimes. We shouldn’t be obliged to pay for their imprisonment.
By all means work away at solving root causes but in the meantime no more catch and release. Get the punks off the streets.
I see the David Millers of this country as part of the problem.

It won’t help curb gun crime one iota. But it will help give the appearance that “something is being done”. That’s usually enough to satisfy the non-gun-owning electorate, who have little understanding of the issue.
