Yes, THAT word definitely applies.
I pay no attention to this peace conference. It is right out of the presidential legacy play book. When you have little time left in office you want to give the historians something favourable to remember you by. Carter did it, so too did Bush I and Clinton. I can’t remember if Reagan did or not. Either way it is a way to look “statesmanlike” and get some good press. Not unlike Clinton in the waning days of his presidency, Bush II could use some of that now as well.
As long as the Palestinians cannot control Hamas, and until Syria and Iran are stopped from supporting them and pouring gasoline on the fire any deal reached in this process is meaningless. My sense is that the average Israeli and the average Palestinian want peace. It’s the lunatics on both sides that will prevent any such agreement.
This is the last ditch effort of a president who is wetting his pants over his legacy being that of a destroyed country in the Middle East, a divided country in North America, and American national credibility on the world stage lower than history has ever recorded it.
Like his other grand schemes this photo-op will fail as well, you need more than the presidential seal to pull something like this off, you need respect and credibility…. and this president has neither.
Last night I was watching lord KO with my pops (who has never watched countdown, and laughed all night), and this came on. It’s funny but sad at the same time.
