Has Anyone Noticed

– that while everyone and their dog is moaning about the Bush administration not coming down on their buddies the Saudi’s about the girl who is going to be beaten and locked up for being raped our government has taken the decisive action of pasting up a few more silly images of Stephan Dion on the party website?

Stephen Harper – stepping right up on the world stage and making a difference, there’s a world leader for ya, I’m so proud!!

I don’t even like Dion but I am actually starting to feel sympathy for the guy. Almost everyday, I have to listen to another carefully taken out of context quote in a CPC commercial trashing him. There’s billboards and websites too. It’s low brow silliness and one has to wonder if it won’t eventually backfire on Harper. At some point he really needs to get on with governing and cease the propaganda against Dion and for his nu gumbermit or the North Star or whatever. It’s like we have a government who just read a marketing textbook on branding and they got giddy and went crazy with the whole thing.

I find it weird in the extreme. It’s as though they’ve handed their entire communications strategy over to a couple of not-very bright bloggers whose idea of poltical commentary is bad photoshopping. I hope this is just a blip, and not the signal of a permanent drop in our national IQ.

Politics is a contact sport, wear a cup. The Libs wrote the book on personaly attacking the leader of the opposition. When it happens to them you hear them cry foul, and try to brand them “American Style” attack ads because they have nothing else to fall back on.

It would be nice if we could expect better of any politician, but I’ve given up on high expectations of those in public life years ago.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

So to summarize – we should set the bar not TOO much lower than the worst that came before.

    Gee.

    Gee.

There’s no way to set the bar any lower than it already is. The bar is buried. If there ever was a bar to begin with.

To each his own. I’m in business, and I’ve seen some buried bars. I figure easy cynicism is a copout, and part of my job is to raise the bar when I can. That goes for my volunteerism and my politics as well.

As a musician, however, I have reluctantly accepted that my lot in life is to lower the bar as far as possible, so that aspiring Celtic guitarists may stare and say “Shit, if HE’s not ashamed to get up there and play…”

I feel the same way when I get drunk enough to dance at a wedding reception.
