Okay, So WHO Are the “MSM”, Anyway?
I always thought that the MSM were that collection of Islamofascinazichrisophobicommiehomo print, radio and television outlets devoted to the destruction of Western Civilization and all that is right and good. But I guess maybe I was wrong.
My favourite lunatic political analyst has posted the story of Mehrnoushe Solouki, the Canadian filmmaker incarcerated and on trial in Iran. Following his usual profound analysis, Scenty sniffs: “Don’t expect the MSM and the Left to care too much, though.”
And that’s why I’m confused.
a) Scenty’s source for this story, and his sole link, is a CBC story. Not surprising, since CBC has been covering the story since it broke last summer. I kinda thought CBC was MSM.
b) Her arrest and subsequent incarceration have been reported extentively in both the Gazette and the Globe and Mail since last March. I kinda thought the Globe and the Gazette were MSM, too.
c) The two organizations fighting hardest to secure her release are Amnesty International and Journalistes Sans Frontieres. I kinda thought they were both sorta leftish.
So, Scenty…it seems both the MSM and the Leftists are a bit more on top of the story than you are. When you see the world as a Tex Avery cartoon, some of the subtleties…like accuracy…inevitably get left out.
But you can redeem yourself, if you want. Describe to us, if you would, exactly what it is your beloved Harper Government is doing to secure the release of Ms. Solouki.

I would imagine Amnesty International got overlooked by Mr Sentinel because it’s investigating our own government and condemning it for torture complicity for Afghanistan, and that wipes out all and any other actions it is doing, from his POV.
Scenty has his own, very personal definition of “Leftist”…thus my Tex Avery reference.
In the old wartime and postwar Popeye cartoons by Avery, the Bad Guys were frequently shown as flying big, black bombers, marked simply “Enemy – Take Your Pick!” That describes Scenty’s world to a T. His “Leftists” include communists, fascists, gays, Nazis, Muslims, the EU, and essentially anyone he disagrees with, all conspiring together against him…and he is genuinely unable to distinguish between them.
“and he is genuinely unable to distinguish between them.”
…which is leading to his support of at least one group that appears to be nothing more than a bunch of Neo-Nazi dead heads. But I don’t think he realizes what they actually stand for; what that kind of hatred leads to. It is painful to watch someone get duped liked that, yet you can see the tone of his site changing almost daily.
You’re exactly right, Tree. But it’s instructive, in a horrible kind of way. I think at one point or another we’ve all looked back at the thirties and wondered how Germans – just people, not inherently more or less evil than any other nation -could sit back and watch the rising tide of hatred, and not see what was coming. Well, now we get to watch.
In the past two months, Scenty’s new friends have called for the expulsion of Muslims from America and Europe (sound familiar?), promoted rallies aimed at restoring national “purity” (sound familiar?), relied on lies and distortion to whip up popular fear (sound familiar?), and promoted rallies to promote their hatred of Islam (sound familiar?). Over the last month, they’ve actually come out even further – several of the threads on Scenty’s new posting home promote closer links with neo-nazis, and bemoan the fact that “twenty century history” (i.e., that holocaust thing) is getting in the way of really being able to cuddle up to Europe’s new fascist class.
I hope he actually reads what some of his new friends are saying before long, but I sort of doubt that will happen. They form a little self-validating community to reinforce their mutual sense of righteousness and self-importance. And poor old Scenty doesn’t actually know what a “Nazi” is. It’s just one of those all purpose bad guys to him.
Yeah, I always get a kick out of the anti-”MSM” folks–who are utterly dependent on same for their blogs. And the real laugh is when they call themselves an “alternative.” WTF?
Well, they are an “alternative”, I guess. An alternative to fact checking, peer review, editorial boards, accountability to the media consumer and market, accuracy and balance.
And the stupidity continues. This comment under Scenty’s thread (the only one, actually…running out of unbanned people, I guess) from “Alain”:
Huh? The CBC story cites Amnesty International and Journalistes Sans Frontieres. Prior CBC, Globe and Gazette coverage list several NGOs pressing for Ms. Souloki’s release.
What is WITH these people? Do their brains actually shut down altogether when they encounter input that doesn’t jive with their ideology?
“What is WITH these people? Do their brains actually shut down altogether when they encounter input that doesn’t jive with their ideology?”
The answer is yes. It’s the standard ideologue response – jerk knee insert usual blurb about the conspiring MSM and don’t even bother with a google search.
BUT…(he said, holding his head in his hands, and returning to one of his favourite mantras, indicating a point of real bewilderment)…
IF what you believe depends on lies…or at least willful disregard of actual information…at what point to you start to wonder whether there might actaully be something wrong with what you believe?
IF what you believe depends on lies…or at least willful disregard of actual information…at what point to you start to wonder whether there might actaully be something wrong with what you believe?
But I think their worldview depends on those lies. They have to believe that they are right – the right people living the right way so to speak. So if it takes lies to continue the facade, then so be it. I think for these people the worst thing is being WRONG. Their whole worldview is based on being right in every single way.
…which is leading to his support of at least one group that appears to be nothing more than a bunch of Neo-Nazi dead heads.
Any of you guys read American Fascists? Stunning book and great insight into the Right Wing Christian Fascist movement in the U.S.
‘Every once in awhile, usually after an indulgence of one kind or another, I begin to realize that – Hey, these are exactly the kinds of things they say about us.
We are delusional. We are an echo chamber. We are stubborn and will not listen to reason. We ignore inconveniences in our logic.
It really blows my mind. What if we really ARE Nazis? OMG! Did you guys hear that? Wheres my keys? Is someone listening? I gotta go home man!
Well, we have IPCC. They have a TV weatherman. I guess that means the jury’s still out.
