Things That I wasn’t Surprised To Read

Tories transfer [Aboriginal] funding

The Conservative government is quietly dipping into the fund set aside to compensate victims of Indian residential schools and is using the money to fund new spending and to pay for cost overruns in its summer jobs program, The Gazette has learned.

But government officials could not say yesterday what – if any – effect the decision to use $82.6 million of the Indian Residential School Settlement Trust could have on its ability to administer the $1.9-billion fund and deliver cheques to thousands of survivors who have applied for compensation.

Whose getting robbed to pay Paul — again.

New security plan for Parliament Hill in the works

A new security plan is being developed in Ottawa that could greatly limit public access to Parliament, says a news report.

Go figure ‘eh…..

After all this time, after all the hardship and emotion and please and horror stories in the residential school saga, they go and do this.

That radical part of me is being radical again.

See what top notch money managers they are! We should all bow before their budgetary skills.

Ummm… I think they need a third party to manage their budgets.

Is it a “transfer” or a “borrow”?

  6. balbulican on November 17th, 2007 at 7:58 am

    It’s a borrow.

I find it very difficult to pass up an opportunity to diss Canada’s New Northern Star Government, or whoever they are these days. But but this particular instance is nothing more than a cash flow strategy, not an attempt to deplete the Residential School Fund. Much as I’d love to, I don’t see anything untoward happening here: the government moves money from pot to pot to meet short term obligations and maximize long term yield on its reserves, and that’s all that’s happening here.

It’s an indicator of priorities…. we ran over budget on some programs, we need money that has not yet been approved for some new potentially vote getting stuff, lets take it from the Aboriginal pot because no significant vote is going to be inpacted if they’re inconvenienced.

Still can’t see it. The call on cash for the Residential School program payouts won’t be for another few months: the deadline for applications just passed. I’m not sure where you see the inconvenience kicking in.
