Anyone who remembers the lead up to the American invasion of Iraq can’t help but to see similarities with current rhetoric surrounding Iran - but Iran has something Iraq didn’t have, powerful friends.
The barely reported highlight of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Tehran for the Caspian Sea summit last week was a key face-to-face meeting with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
A high-level diplomatic source in Tehran tells Asia Times Online that essentially Putin and the Supreme Leader have agreed on a plan to nullify the George W Bush administration’s relentless drive towards launching a preemptive attack, perhaps a tactical nuclear strike, against Iran. An American attack on Iran will be viewed by Moscow as an attack on Russia.
– then again, we need to remember that Bush does have that “higher father” thing going on, an those types of people don’t necessarily have boundless amounts common sense do they?

With Russia getting Iran’s back now, I doubt the U.S. will instigate a war, but be prepared for a new cold war if tensions continue to rise and Putin props himself up in a new invented position of the Russian parliament. Regardless of the Russian involvement, most Presidential candidates have not ruled out the possibility of a strike against Iran, which is worrisome since many of them call themselves Democrats.
