Some Folks Get It
The National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC) called on mainstream media outlets to stop inviting Ann Coulter as a guest commentator/pundit and strongly condemned her comments that Jews should be “perfected†by accepting the New Testament and that America would be better off if Judaism were “thrown away†and all Americans were Christian.
Meanwhile, in other news, Shlemazl gives Coulter free pass but declares Stageleft a “motherfucker” and a “racist” for linking to an article that Shlemazl concedes is probably true. Details at 11. Parental advisory: strong language and potentially brain-threatening absence of logic.

I dunno, I think more people should see her say this. Show it widely and let people draw their own conclusions.
There’s an interesting difference between Ann and your friend Shlemazl: Ann has the courage, if that’s the right word, to tell people straight up what she thinks. She doesn’t need to rely on tricks like pretending people of a state are the same as the state. It’s interesting to me that this conflation of the State of America and the people of America is part of the horribly flawed logic that OBL used to justify attacks on American civilians.
Good for them for getting it right.
By the way, you guys aren’t racist and I’ve said so on this site and over at Shlemazl’s site.
Now just yesterday I read a comment on a progressive blog that basically said that Jews are a separate “tribe” that has evolved differently and is a treat to the “silent majority” of “northern European” folks who built the country.
The commenter doesn’t have the profile of an Ann Coulter who somehow has managed to maintain a full cable TV schedule despite a large number of offensive comments before her latest, so it isn’t as important as that, but you’d think someone would say something. So far not a peep.
So if Coulter shouldn’t be treated as a normal or legitimate TV commentator, how should bloggers treat blog commenters who go over the line?
“By the way, you guys aren’t racist…”
We know.
“… and I’ve said so on this site and over at Shlemazl’s site.”
Thank you, we appreciate that.
“How should bloggers treat blog commenters who go over the line?”
Each blog has its own norms. Here, we let anyone say anything, and then we argue with the ones we disagree with. I have a vague memory of Stageleft deleting some really horrific obscenity once, but I may be mistaken.
Apart from that, we think that bad (racist, stupid, homophobic, or just really illogical) thinking is better dissected than censored.
thanks for the reply-I agree in principle-always disturbing when nobody volunteers to do the dissection but in this case that isn’t an issue.

Wow. I haven’t been to Robert’s in a while because things tended to get kind of…silly. That’s an excellent discussion.
