When France and Germany declined to support the US invasion of Iraq, they had to convince themselves that France had "always" been an enemy of the US, and we witnessed the hilarious spectacle of "Freedom Fries" and "cheese eating surrender monkeys" and the like. I can't wait to hear them start explaining that France has ALWAYS been the US's best friend (an argument for which there's considerably more evidence than the first premise, going right back to the Revolutionary War).
