Just In Case You Thought –

– that the Ahmadinejad’s of the world were alone in their religious denial about homosexuality, go read Juan Coles post on the matter.

Did you watch the — did you watch the debate? I watched six hours of debate, and I had a face-to-face fight with Cardinal McCarrick, who told me to my face there are no homosexuals in our seminaries. This is a discredited bunch of once holy men.

- and

[Conservative] ‘commentators have not mentioned the blatant homophobia in both Africa and Southeast Asia. Christian leaders in Africa still maintain that there are no homosexuals in their countries, or if homosexuality is admitted, that it was “caught” from white Europeans.

[.....]

Homosexual people in Africa have told me that they risk murder if they come out of their closets. They believe that if they were killed, the act would be endorsed by many Christian leaders of that continent, who quote scripture to justify it.’

Show me a fundamentalist of any belief structure, and I’ll show you an idiot.

“Show me a fundamentalist of any belief structure, and I’ll show you an idiot.”

Y’know…it just occurred to me that every fundamentalist I know would agree with you. The irony is that they would all think you were talkin’ about the other guy…

You can broaden it from “fundamentalist” to “ideologue”…people who define their reality based on an ideology, and expect the real world to conform. For years China had no formal program of AIDS treatment or education because the government insisted that the world’s most populous country had no homosexuals.

LOL! Remind you of anybody we know?

    That’s just GORGEOUS!

    Ah, Little Britain….

Sure. It’s exactly the same. The fact that homosexuals are actually executed in Iran amounts to nothing. Show me a leftwinger and I’ll show you an idiot.

Hummm…. don’t take this the wrong way shlemazl, but the post is about religious denial regarding homosexuality.

I think you would be hard pressed to find a reasonable, rational, thinking, individual who denied that homosexuals are persecuted, and even executed, in Iran — does that change, even slightly, the fact that there are religious nutbars in denial regarding homosexuality in our country, and others?

  8. shlemazl on September 30th, 2007 at 11:20 am

There are nutters everywhere. You and Juan Coles are confused in your comparisons.

Juan says: So if some American Republicans, Catholics and evangelicals want to have the standing to laugh at Ahmadinejad for his prejudice, they have some work to do at home first.

In fact the vast majority of Republicans, Catholics or evangelicals deny the existence of gays. Neither do they support persecution or execution of gays. No idea why “Republicans” are in this list in any case: it’s like saying “If horses, Irish and other Celts want to jump high, they have some work to do at home first.

Pesonally I find it fascinating that the “left” are

    a) defensive of Mr Ahmadi Nejad and at the same time
    b) imply that he is “right”.

Daily Kos authors were ever so upset that Mr Nejad wasn’t made feel welcome enough in the States…

In fact he is a typical left-wing populist who is using socialist economic model combined with racial, religious and homophobic populist hate as his political tools. No different from the Soviets.

Oops, should have said “In fact the vast majority of Republicans, Catholics or evangelicals do not deny the existence of gays. Neither do they support persecution or execution of gays.

  10. stageleft on September 30th, 2007 at 11:53 am

I didn’t say that the majority of anyone denied the existance of gays shlemazl, or even that Republicans, Catholics or evangelicals supported the persecution or execution of gays – but some of the nutbars do exactly that, don’t they?

  11. Suddenly Conservative christians are Worried about Gay Rights?? « Leviticus 19:19 & gods’ Dumb Suggestions on September 30th, 2007 at 11:55 pm

[...] So all of a sudden the “jesus Hates Fags” Right is deeply concerned about gay rights and egalitarianism. If so then why not prove it by supporting those ideals in the ‘08 election?  And why not be honest about the fact that certain christian nations are at least as adamant as Iran about denying the existence of its homosexuals.
