Who Didn’t See This Coming?

Show of hands now, who really believed what Bush said

Even with cutbacks promised by President Bush, the United States may wind up with thousands more troops in Iraq next summer than before the buildup of forces he ordered in January.

All those who raised their hands please contact me by email, I know a Nigerian banker who has a sweet deal for ya.

One Response to “Who Didn’t See This Coming?”

It finally occurred to me to wonder what the situation would be like now in the Middle East if we had not invaded Iraq. Assuming Saddam was still in power there, I think it’s likely Iran might not now be developing nuclear items. The problem with invading countries is that the balance of power inevitably shifts, and not always in ways that policy makers would have desired. If we had left Iraq alone, I think the other Arab countries there would eventually have had to deal with him. They were terrified of him. He was the neighborhood bully. I believe our invasion of Iraq, quite ironically, has as much to do with the protection of the status quo in Saudia Arabia (specifically, the royal family) and Israel as with putting down a tyrant.
