My education included at least 14 years of religious schooling at the hands of some of the most authoritarian Catholic nuns one might ever find. Even in one of their nastiest moments wielding a yard stick, I was never subjected to anything like the kids who attended this school. Yet, on occasion, I will wake-up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat after having a nightmare recalling one of those “lovely” nuns screaming at me. I never endured bright lights or other torture like psychological tactics to scare me into believing in God and Jesus Christ like the students of Grenville Christian College. The nuns were effective enough at instilling fear without those methods. I can’t imagine what it must have been like to be dragged from your bed in the middle of the night as a teenager and subjected to this kind of cult agenda. Being so young, you would never forget it. My education taught me a lot about the bible and Christ’s teachings. Never once did I find any reference to dark rooms and bright lights for indoctrination purposes.

Religious education really does attract some strange people as teachers, pastors, headmasters etc. I witnessed some pretty disturbing episodes in my days in a Catholic school and have two friends whose lives were ruined by one of the school elders who were supposedly acting in Jesus’ name. They were not doing so based on Christ’s teachings, of course, but instead, they were merely justifying their own power trips in his name. This school should close and it should be burned to the ground to wash away the hypocrisy and bring closure to the students that it screwed up for so many years.
