Why not ‘eh?
A police officer who arrested him June 11 said [Republican Senator Larry] Craig peered through a crack in a restroom stall door for two minutes and made gestures suggesting to the officer he wanted to engage in “lewd conduct.”
Most of this is pure schadenfreude, of course, especially given the socially conservative nature of Craig and some other Republicans caught with their drawers down.
And Arwen, unfortunately for Craig, he didn’t even get the benefit of a semen “deposit”, just the shame.
This whole episode is rich given Craig’s denials after it surfaced in the media. The question begs though if you weren’t doing anything wrong, why’d ya plead guilty in the first place?
In Craigs’ case it is denial of personal nature that has led to the shame - he, and millions of other fundamentalist christians, have decided that homosexuality is a sin, therefore, the individual who is born homosexual must deny their personal nature to remain in a state of grace, or commit an abomination and fall from grace.
Since natural urges like sex are nearly impossible to suppress the guy may be able to keep things under control for a while, but eventually he starts unconsciously humming the sometimes ya feel like a nut jingle and hanky panky with a stranger in a public washroom is what happens.
People like that would be better off, and society a hell of a lot safer, if folks like Craig would simply be honest with themselves.
Treehugger - I meant the homosexuals that Craig shames - not his own feelings of guilt. There is a rich tradition in religious, legal, and political history of making sub-human the “tempting devils” which are “responsible” for somebody’s taboo turn-on. To me, this goes much farther than schadenfreude and looks like part of the same illness that means that women and gay men the world over are persecuted, from burqas to bashings to executions for such sins as being gay or raped.
Although, to be amusing, the first thing he said at his press conference:
“Thank you all very much for coming out today.”
Comedy gold.
Like someone posted in another thread about who is next to find jesus - I will start taking bets on who the next Republican will be to be embroiled in a gay-scandal.
Personally I’m going with Romney - the “homormon”.
How surprised am I? In a rehash of the usual upper-right-quadrant ‘but they done worse’ defenceWingNut Sean Hannity is writing off Craig by comparing the event to Clinton, who had sex in the Oval Office which some people consider “a sacred place”.
Hannity’s a moron. Clinton may have got his nob sucked in the Oval Office, but he didn’t also say that he wasn’t sexually attracted to women, that women shouldn’t be allowed to marry their partners, and that women shouldn’t be allowed to join the Scouts.
Throbbin’: I say Rove, but I don’t believe he’d have any actual shame about it, and I imagine something much more repugnant than glory hole hijinks.
In fact, I’m going to walk away from that thought, because whatever Rove is up to is probably something I very much don’t want to think about.
“Treehugger - I meant the homosexuals that Craig shames - not his own feelings of guilt.”
Arwen, I know what you meant; I was being sarcastic. My comment was perhaps misplaced given your very good examples of the sub-humanizing that hypocrites like Craig engage in while practicing said behaviour, but I can’t help myself. I really enjoy watching these types become scorched by their own flame, so to speak.
As for “coming out” that was almost too good to be true. ;)
The fact that Hannity is a moron doesn’t change the fact that he hosts the third most listened to talk radio program in America - that’s a lot of people getting told that the oval office is sacred ground, and sucking that opinion right up.
So tapping your feet in a stall is a signal to other gay guys that you want to get it on?
That explains that one night at The Vat.
Who knew?
(Rant on)
What the hell is it with Republicans getting caught in “illicit” homosexual acts?
I don’t care what any dude wants to do with his dick and an adult partner happy to be involved.
I do care if the partner is somehow constructed to be shameful in wider discourse - either male or female. If you’re not willing to be seen with him or her in casual situations, then keep your goddamn shorts on and your waggly fingers to yourself.
What the hell is it that semen and shame get deposited at the same time? Why is this a rule of the universe?
