I will undoubtedly be in the minority on Editorial Board here at Stageleft this morning. Both of my learned colleagues are experts in Aboriginal affairs. I am not; not by a long shot. My hat goes off the dozens of peaceful protests that will be conducted by First Nations across the country. Decades of stupid government policies and the obvious hope that the whole issue of treaty resolution will just go away by prime minister after prime minister have left a blight on the Native peoples and created a virtual third world situation for many on reserves across the country. In a land of prosperity such as Canada the situation is inexcusable. We have the resources to move beyond the desperate and despicable “ghetto” that we have put our Aboriginal peoples into.Â
Having said that, I do not believe that the Mohawk Warriors speak for the majority of First Nations. They have a history of violence and provocative actions such as their blockade of the 401 and CN Rail lines this morning. It is a cheap stunt and if their rhetoric is to be believed they are fully daring the government into a violent confrontation. Blockading highways, train tracks or seizing land by force (Caledonia) are not means of peaceful or lawful protest.  The Mohawks should not be allowed to operate above the rule of law. They are in my humble opinion not helping the cause of treaty resolution or Aboriginal grievances one iota. They may be polarizing opposition and racism even further against the Native peoples in Canada.Â

Whooee! Well Treehuggin’ feller, I gotta disagree with some of what yer sayin’.
Peaceful, non-provocative attempts to resolve the Caledonia land claim were going on for over a century. Result: nothing.
Peaceful, non-provocative attempts to resolve the Ipperwash land claim were going on for 50 years at the time Dudley George was murdered. Result: nothing.
Our federal government has stalled and delayed and pushed the First Nations people into a corner.
How many more centuries do you suggest they sit idly by while their lands are illegally developed and the treaties they signed in good faith are ignored by Ottawa and Queen’s Park?
For many, the time for all talk and no action has passed. Ottawa is to blame. It’s not Conservatives or Liberals who I am refering to. It’s every government we’ve ever had. Liberal and Conservative, federal and provincial. All levels of government have used their insidious, bureaucratic methods of stalling and delaying and denying until, inevitably, flashpoints are reached.
The troublemakers are not the natives.
The troublemakers are the ones who broke the treaties.
The troublemakers are the ones who have not negotiated in good faith.
The troublemakers are the stallers, delayers, deniers who think that sweeping injustice under the rug is effective.
There are limits to the lies and bad-faith dealing that can be tolerated.
