Glass Houses

Israel is unhappy that a British lecturers union boycotting Israel’s academic institutions, and they had my sympathy right up until Professor Uriel Reichman opened his yop.

Professor Uriel Reichman, President of the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya, said Thursday night that the British boycott is “a modern reformulation of Judenreine” a German expression used by the Nazis meaning “Jew free,” describing areas they had emptied of a Jewish presence.

The professor called on Anglo-Jewry to send their children to learn in Israel “instead of sending them to institutions where there exists one-sided preaching for the elimination of the Jewish State.”

I wonder if the good Professor Reichman is equally distressed and outraged about the one-sided Israeli institutions of education that use the government approved maps that do not show any of the Palestinian villages that Isreal Israel depopulated and destroyed?

I wonder if the good Professor Reichman is equally distressed and outraged about the one-sided Israeli institutions of education that use the government approved geography and history books that don’t include these villages or the Arabs who used to occupy them?

I wonder if the good Professor Reichman is aware that Moshe Dayan’s famous [now infamous] quote about this is all over the Internet?

“Jewish villages were built in the place of Arab villages. You do not even know the names of these Arab villages, and I do not blame you because geography books no longer exist, not only do the books not exist, the Arab villages are not there either Nahlal arose in the place of Mahlul; Kibbbutz Gvat in the place of Jibta; Kibbutz Sarid in the place of Huneifis; and Kefar Yehushu’a in the place of Tal al- Shuman. There is not one single place built in this country that did not have a former Arab Population.”

People who live in that sort of glass house really shouldn’t use words like Judenreine should they?

“Isreal”? This spelling is used by Islamonazi and neo-nazi sites. Is this a copy and paste article?

It would appear so. Where did you get the distorted Moshe Dayan’s quote from? Here is what was actually said:

I do agree that all maps should display historic state of affairs rather than the current one. Shall we organize a joint petition to our Government to remove the word “Canada” from world maps?

Furthermore I suggest we should start boycotting Britain. Not only are they occupying Iraq and Afghanistan, but they are also still occupying Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Cornwall as well as Gibraltar and a number of other locations worldwide. These are occupations that have been going on for centuries. In some cases the whole regions have been depopulated (e.g. Ireland or Scottish Highlands) and the current government- issued maps do not identify the villages that have disappeared over the years.

Unless the boycott is applied in a consistent manner, it could appear that the Jews are being singled out for special treatment yet again, which is exactly what Prof Reichmann referred to.

No shlemazl, it’s a spelling mistake, a simple spelling mistake – two interesting things though

[a] I did not know that spelling it that was had any relation to Islamonazi and neo-nazi sites, a quick web search told me that it’s a fairly common spelling mistake but I will have to spend some time looking into this.

(When and where did the term Islamonazi originate?)

[b] Thanks for the correction on the Dayan quote, not including that one sentence “In a considerable number of places, we purchased the land from Arabs and set up Jewish villages where there had once been Arab villages.” makes the tone more aggressive than the original.

    – it doesn’t change the idea that that the maps, and history, are not taught, but the correction is appreciated.

Your suggestion to change maps has merit, maps in Canada are currently being changed place names to the historical place names that were renamed when Britain colonized what ultimately became Canada.

    a) “Isreal” is used along with the “Zionist entity” by haters who cannot force themselves into calling Israel by it’s proper name.

Don’t know where Islamonazi term is coming from, but it’s a good one to characterize Islamist groups [e.g. Hamas and Hezbollah] that are calling for extermination of Jews and raise their hands in immitation of the Nazi salute. Care for photos and quotes or have you seen plenty?

I guess the term would also cover such Palestinian leader Grand Mufti of Jeruslem Al Huseini who fought alongside Hitler in WWII and committed war crimes in Yugoslavia and other locations.

Clearly it also covers Al Qaeda and others fighting for a worldwide Islamic state.

[b] Care to explain how adding the fact that the land was purchased and the context that Dayan was arguing against expelling those that commited crimes make the quote “more aggressive”?

I note that you haven’t provided information on where you’ve got your “quote” from.

Your claim that “history is not taught” is bullshit, take it from someone who has a niece in an Israeli school and has some idea about what is actually taught. Perhaps you care to provide evidence? Not only is your Dayan quote somewhat out of date, teaching history isn’t normally about just teaching the names of all the villages going back to pre-war times.

I am heartened that we both agree on the need to revert all the names on the map to their historic origins. It’s not just Canada though. Danzig (Gdansk), Koenegsberg (Kaliningrad), Judea (West Bank) and thousands of other places weren’t on the map “approved by the government” last time I looked.

There is just one thing that bothers me… What about places that changed their names several times over the years?

Also, I googled for “Isreal” and all entries with “Isreal” in the first returned page came from haters.

Google did retun some pages which did not have the misspelled word (like wikipedia) – I guess they automatically search for close spellings if they assume a mistake.

Re (a): I would assume, since you have seen me spell Israel properly on different occasions, that you would recognize a spelling mistake for what it is – time permitting I’ll look around and see where Islamonazi came from.

Re (b): reread what I wrote

Re history: I have heard this from various sources over the years, TV, radio, Internet news sites, etc., look in the Wikipedia… and don’t take the complaint too hard, I’ve also b*tched out Canada for doing the same thing – the victor always gets to write the history books, and they all gloss it over.

Re where the incorrect quote came from: I had heard/seen the quote previously, goggled, and there it was, it lives in multiple places, I believe IIRC I found it here.

Re names on maps: I guess that would depend on who changed the name and why wouldn’t it? I can see no difficulty in changing, for example, the names of places renamed by colonialists when they showed up and decided that the original names were either unpronounceable or that their friends or benefactors might like to have a bay or inlet named after them.

What do you suppose Israels motivation was?

Re places that changed their names multiple times: give me an example or 2 – the answer would probably depend on why the names changed wouldn’t it?

    Lest you think I forgot…

Care for photos and quotes or have you seen plenty?

I’ve seen the hate filled rhetoric, heard the threats, and seen/heard the stupidity. If you think that I’m on side with that, and I’m starting to get the feeling that you might be thinking just that, look elsewhere.

    a) Yes I have that’s why assumed you did a cut and paste job.

    b) Mona Baker… Remember her well, the Manchester “academic”. She fired two left-wing Israelis just for their nationality alone – nothing to do with their views or politics. She was proud of that and wrote them a nasty letter. Manchester University was less proud, so she had a bit of trouble explaining it afterwards.

I honestly don’t know how can anyone fire a person on the basis of their skin, colour, religion or nationality. I have people working for me, including Muslims and including those whose views I very strongly disagree with but firing them… Just can’t imagine how one can do that. Guess it’s easier if you don’t have basic decency or self-respect.

Every single one of her “quotes” have been debunked long ago. Typically a communist Israeli journalist or occasionally a western neo-nazi or an arab would publish something in a left-wing newspaper many years after the events, but there still are original quotes in the newspapers of those times which totally disproof libelous “quotes”.

One does not need to be Einstein to realize that Begin would never describe Arabs in a speech in the Knesset as “beasts walking on two legs”. In fact he said that “The fate of… Jewish children has been different from all the children of the world throughout the generations. No more. We will defend our children. If the hand of any two-footed animal is raised against them, that hand will be cut off, and our children will grow up in joy in the homes of their parents.” Still, anti-Semites and lefties lap up this blood libel. Same old story.

    ————————————————————-
Israel’s motivation in changing the names? Most of the time they were returning Biblical names. So what?

What was Polish motivation in changing Danzig to Gdansk and why is Canada full of European names?

Israeli historians present both sides; including the crazy politically motivated pro-Palestinian history. So what?

Living during the conflict is not good, but it is amazing how Israeli kids are brought up without hate. Compare it to the kind of education poor Palestinian kids get from their parents…

    Name place change… Ok.

Salem (Hittites) – Yerushalaim (Hebrews) – Aelia Capitolina (Byzantium)-Bayt al-Muqaddas (under Muslims, interestingly it translates as “the Jewish temple” and is based on Hebrew) – Jerusalem (Crusaders) – Al-Quds (Ottomans, an abbreviation from Bayt al-Muqaddas ) – Jerusalem/Yerushalaim (Mandate Palestine and Israel)

Or this one: Tvanksta (Prussians) – Königsberg (Teutonic order, 1254-1945) – Kaliningrad (USSR/Russia 1945-).

Another one: Fort Rouillé (French) – York/Toronto (British) – Toronto (British/Canada)
