– that senate Republicans are not putting up too big a fuss over a new bill calling for US troops to be scheduled out of Iraq within a year because they’re just plain sick and tired of doing the Presidents dirty work for him?
Think about it, at this point the decision as to whether or not to fund the troops is in the presidents hands, he, instead of rank and file elected Republicans who will soon have to face an electorate increasingly unhappy with Bush’s handling of the Iraq war, everything we have learned about the lead-up to the war…. and pretty well everything else he’s done for that matter.
The ‘I’m not gonna sign it because of the pork’ gig makes for good political rhetoric, but everybody knows that he’s signed enough pork into law over the last 6 years to eradicate hunger in 6 third world countries - so reasonable people don’t buy it.
Politically it’s a good move on the senates part. Bush asked for money, the money he asked for was authorized, and if the troops do not get that money it is because he, and not congress, refused to give it to them.
It’s good for Republicans, good for Democrats, and presents a rock and a hard place for Bush to deal with.

Well, let’s face it, the pork added on to the bill is absolutely disgraceful. Is this a foretaste of the way the Dems will govern? Why couldn’t it have been an up or down “referendum” on Iraq? It just muddies the already filthy waters. What in hell is it that infects legislators’ brains with corruption when they set foot in DC? Or were they already crooks long before they got there?
