When I ordered the recently released book, The Jesus Family Tomb, I swore to myself that I wouldn’t post about it.  With all of the nonsense regarding this topic in the media lately, I am now compelled to write a short note about it.

My biggest criticism of the sound bite style media coverage to date is that there are few, if any journalists, looking into the veracity of the claims made in the book and most, if not all, are focused on Christian reactions to it.  To be clear, the authors, Simcha Jacobovici and Dr. Charles Pellegrino are not stating definitively that Ossuaries they have found are those of Jesus and his family.  They are arguing that it is statistically likely based on the cluster of names that have been found.

What is frustrating is listening to the talk radio hosts and watching the CNN coverage full of people who have clearly not read the book or watched the documentary.  It is mind boggling that the media cannot even qualify their talking heads to the minimum standard of being an expert in the field of 1st century C.E. history, archaeology or any of the other of the other relevant topics such as the inscriptions on the ossuaries.  Instead, we are treated to a barrage of unqualified opinions by Christian fundamentalists who wouldn’t take an objective look at the evidence presented if it landed in their laps.  They are often juxtaposed against various conspiracy theorists that are equally blinded by their take on Christianity.

I am almost finished the book myself.  I should have it done tonight.  I would love to see a debate on the evidence presented instead of the mindless nonsense being peddled in the media that the authors are attempting to smear Christian faith or bring down the Church.  That is not what they are arguing at all.

It really seems that with so many topics these days, there is no room for an intelligent discussion of facts.  Instead, positions are carefully crafted in sound bites, media coaches are hired and spin abounds just in time for the media to arrive with cameras and microphones to suck it all up and broadcast it to the world.  The Jesus Family Tomb “controversy” is but the latest example.
