That’s the line that our favorite local (Right)WingNut Lowell Green is opening with this morning - it’s all in aid of his ‘global warming is a myth’ campaign. Every time he goes on one of these juvenile tirades it’s the same thing, ‘it will kill the country if we even speak the words Kyoto Protocol’….. let alone make any effort to meet our commitment under it.

But this morning, buried in his petulant sarcasm, there is in fact a question worth answering.

That question is “What do we do?”

Far too often people like Green use the, it’s too big, and (if it is happening) nothing we can do will help without killing business and industry in the western world and how will regular people ever survive?

– and, because there are those who would rather buy into that sort of stupidity than actually do something, people shrug and think of other less uncomfortable things.

Contrary to what Lowell and his merry band of advocates, adherents, and disciples, may want you to believe every man, woman, and child, can in fact do something…. so to answer your question Lowell, here are my suggestions for what you can do.

  • park your car one or two days a week, there’s a perfectly good public transit route that will take you right down into The Market where you work - you’ll save gas, save money, and lesson pollution that helps feed global warming
  • trade your old light bulbs in for the low wattage, high efficiency, type - reduce your personal energy consumption
  • make better purchasing decisions, if the product has unnecessary packaging don’t buy it - reduce waste
  • recycle and reuse - it’s not hard, even an old fart like you could do something
  • get a programmable thermostat, they work wonders, have the heat turn itself down when you;re asleep and turn itself back up just before you get up in the morning

– and the number one thing you can do is quit your childish bitching and complaining about what others are not doing and do your bit; or does the “every little bit helps” philosophy only work when you’re saying it?

The “But mom….. little Billy isn’t cleaning up his bedroom” line didn’t work when you were 6 so why are you still relying on it now that you’re 70?
