Our redneck friends have been baying at the moon for the last day or so because a small town in Quebec has issued their own own cultural manifesto. If the Immigrants-In-Waiting could reply, their answer might read something like this.

Up until a little while ago we all knew what a “leftie” was. A leftie was someone who advocated social liberalism, or social democracy, the responsibility of government to make sure that the less fortunate and/or disadvantaged are not forgotten, and a generally secular society. Admittedly those can be somewhat ambiguous descriptions, apparently a bit to ambiguous for those in the pro-Iraq war, pro-Bush camp, so it’s been redefined.

Usually we are only subjected to stupidity like this during election campaigns – did they call one without telling us, or is this just the new way of doing business the CPoC government promised us?

I yield to no-one in my admiration for Amazon.ca. But can someone please explain to me what Hugh Grant and Groucho Marx have in common?

Harper is apparently going to propose emissions standards for “key industries” by the spring that will, if accepted and turned into law, be implemented in 2010-2015. Whatever he proposes it will be too little, and probably far too late.

Why fuss and bother about Robbie Burns, a mediocre, self-important purveyor of doggerel in dialect, when Scotland’s REAL contribution to world literature goes largely unrecognized? I refer, of course, to the immortal William Topaz McGonagall, widely acknowledged among connaisseurs of the awful to be the worst poet ever to write in (sort of) English.

The stench may be dissipating, but the stain of the recent Obama-Clinton story lingers on. And that’s the real point of an attack like this. The Shit Machine doesn’t aim to present a defensible argument: it’s simply to create a vague impression of wrongdoing, a kind of miasma in which people remember that something bad happened, but no-one quite remembers what.

Politicians have all sorts of reasons and justifications why they cannot do what they promised to do if they were put in office, and every time those who put them in office allow them to break their promises they do nothing more than (to use a phrase from south of the border) embolden them, and others of their ilk.
On the way home from work tonight I turned a ‘wee bit ‘o mental attention to the upcoming Democrat and Republican races that are ramping up, and it just don’t look good no matter which side of things you may stand on.

Notwithstanding that one of my mates in this here Stageleft Basement Bunker (TM) is prone to wearing very tight fitting neoprene outfits for the purposes of underwater exploration, I can assure all of our Stageleft readers, that even though we are some of the trendiest, Volvo driving, latte sipping, cat blogging political and cultural elites [...]
