The thing that I wonder is whether any of those who were foaming at the mouth at people like me who suggested Iraq was both a poor military strategy and ethically suspect will stop and consider their position now that it’s shown itself to be both those things. Probably not, if it interferes with the daily Two Minutes of Hate.
I have read some rather shocking responses to the story of Jose Pedrilla, an American who has been held in solitary confinement without trial or counsel for 3 years. Mammals of all sorts go insane without contact for that length of time; the CIA itself in the 60s called the Communists immoral torturers-on-the-sly for using the same techniques to “legally” break their prisoners. Yet there’s all this hatred saved up for those who might be concerned with his treatment, like you can’t care about the treatment of prisoners without hating the families of those who died in 9/11. It’s simplistic and sad, but more than that, disheartening.
