I don’t know the answer to those two questions. But you forgot Roy’s sidekick, Gabby Hayes.

What an impressively erudite and cultivated lot you Stageleftians are. Posting in transit from Atlanta, but here’s the answer key.

a) So long, farewell, auf wiedersehn, goodbye… (The Von Trapp Family, of course, performing for the guests of the chilly, aristocratic Christopher Plummer under the direction of supernaturally radiant and don’t-you-wanna-just-smack-her-she’s-so-nice Julie Andrews in the film that marked the beginning of the end for Hollywood Musicals, The Sound of Music.

b) Well, I’m leaving in a few minutes for Belize, where George and Mrs. B and I will spend two weeks shooting our next DVD and diving our brains out, clambering through the ruins of Xunantunich, exploring the Jaguar Preserve and eating fish, rice and beans at Mom’s, near the swing bridge. See you all when I get back, and don’t forget to vote for us at the Canadian Blog Awards! That’s me, of course.

c) Happy Trails to You. It was, indeed, Roy Rogers, Dale Evans and the Driftin’ Cowboys (whose only other hit, if memory serves, was “Cool, Cool Water”).

e) Au revoir, old thing, cheerio, ching-ching, nah-poo, toodle-oo, goodbye: From the cheerful, jaunty WW1 music hall classic “Goodbye-ee”, by Bert Lee.

f) I am just going outside and may be some time: The absolute epitome of British stiff upper lip heroic exploration, these were the last words of “Titus” Oates. Caught in a blizzard on their return from their failed polar lunge, Scott’s expedition found themselves without food of fuel, trapped in a blizzard in a small canvas tent just miles from their nearest cache. Frozen, starving and exhausted, they could not go on. Oates, badly frostbitten, was convinced that he was holding the others back. He dragged himself from the frozen sleeping bag, uttered that famous quote (recorded by Scott in his diary shortly before Scott himself froze to death), and disappeared into the storm, thus adding a tragic gloss to the terms “stiff upper lip” and “sang-froid”.

g) We’ll meet again, don’t know where, don’t know when…Vera Lynn heroic-tragic weepy WW1 classic, still brings a tear to my eye even though the image of Vera warbling has largely been supplanted by the image of the world going up in radioactive smoke at the end of Dr. Strangelove.
