Well Said!

Republicans try scare tactic

Trailing in polls, party runs TV ad starring bin Laden

Not the first time terror threat used in bid to sway vote

PHILADELPHIA—The Republicans still can’t find Osama bin Laden, but they know how to showcase him.

Don’t ya just love it?

Be afraid, be very [very] afraid, this man has already killed some of you, he wants to kill more of you, we can’t find him, we haven’t been able to find him for years, he could be anywhere, his agents could be anywhere, we don’t know where they are either, but if you vote for us we’ll keep you safe.

If they fall for that they deserve everything they get, personally I hope they don’t, another 2 years of Bush unchecked and unquestioned could result in a lot of damage – both there, and abroad.

The sad part will be, if they fall for it. The sadder part will be if we fall for something similar up here from the ReCons.

He could even be under YOUR BED! Watch out kids!

You know I saw a great MadTV skit not too long after 9/11 where a public services announcer was saying something like “Don’t be afraid of the terrorists, or they win. But do be mindful that they could be living among us. They could be the people we see on the street, they could be our co-workers, our friends, even our parents!”

  3. balbulican on October 24th, 2006 at 6:24 am

Fear and sex are the great human motivators. I am working on a script which I hope to peddle to Karl Rove which, in all modesty, I think could turn the tide for the Republicans.

Extreme closeup: the glowering, piercing Islamofascinazi eyes of Osama Bin Laden. Ominous minor chords.

Slow Zoom Out: But wait! He’s not glaring…he’s…petrified! Osama is terrirfied? Of what?

Zoom continues: We see that Osama is in fact in shackles. Isn’t that…why, it is! He’s in Abu Ghraib! And behind him…

Zoom continues:…Ann Coulter and Condi Rice, both in matched, spiked, low cut black leather harnesses and other fetish shop accoutrements, brandishing knouts…

Whoops, better stop. Forty two right wing US bloggers and Canadian Sentinel will have to pause a moment to hose down their keyboards…

  4. JimBobby on October 24th, 2006 at 8:50 am

Zoom continues:… Outside Abu Ghraib, we see the stockpiles of WMD. On top of the largest pile, a monkey is yelping gibberish while dancing and pointing at the weapons.

The US needs to move further right imho.

  6. stageleft on October 24th, 2006 at 12:23 pm

Of course it does Jeff, the answer to everything is “move further to the right” isn’t it?

What the US needs to do is moderate, before they become more dangerous than they already are.

  7. Jeff on October 24th, 2006 at 5:59 pm

Last I checked it was the terrorists that were blowing people up in suicide attacks.

See, now this is why you and I can’t see eye to eye, SL.
You still think terrorists respect appeasement and surrender.
You still believe that terrorists want to sit down and talk…

  8. Rosie on October 24th, 2006 at 7:25 pm

Funny how these ads target the fear of Osama. The caption should read “Maybe if we were somewhat competent enough to find Osama you wouldn’t have to be so afraid”.

  9. stageleft on October 24th, 2006 at 7:54 pm

Last I checked it was the terrorists that were blowing people up in suicide attacks.

The Americans are blowing civilians up with hi-tec weapons, the insurgents are blowing people up with bicycle bombs, and both of them are killing civilians in the cross-fire created when they meet.

Regardless of how the people die Jeff they are still dead, little bits of flesh and blood that used to be someones father, or mother, or son, or daughter, or niece, or nephew, or grandparent, or grandchild.

They are little pieces of flesh and blood instead of walking, talking, human beings because of fighting that resulted from the furtherance of American foreign policy.

They’re dead because the United States of America screwed up.

See, now this is why you and I can’t see eye to eye, SL.

No Jeff the reason we don’t see eye to eye is because you can’t think for yourself. You see the world in black and white because that’s what you can understand, it is a concept you can grasp, shades of gray confuse people like you don’t they…. the idea of questioning the way you think things are, or would like them to be, doesn’t occur to you does it?

I suspect it’s because of good old fashioned fear — sad really.

You can rise above that, whether you do or not depends on whether or not you are willing to ask questions.

You still think terrorists respect appeasement and surrender.

Nope, and if you can show me a place where I said that I will not only get in a plane, or on a bus, come to where you live, and, on a bright sunny day, at high noon, on a Saturday when most people are off work, kiss your bare ass in the middle of whatever passes for a town square in your community, … hell man, I’ll give you a months notice of my arrival just to make sure you can gather up a good crowd to watch.

You still believe that terrorists want to sit down and talk…

    See above.

  10. Jeff on October 24th, 2006 at 8:53 pm

“They are little pieces of flesh and blood instead of walking, talking, human beings because of fighting that resulted from the furtherance of American foreign policy.”

This fighting that you deem is from American foreign policy is something I could believe in…..if it weren’t for the myriad of examples in countries all over the world where Muslims are rioting and killing those they disagree with. You speak about my inability to see shades of gray. What do you call your inability to blame terrorism on anything other than George Bush and American foreign policy?

  11. stageleft on October 24th, 2006 at 9:50 pm

My inability to blame terrorism on anything other than George Bush and American foreign policy? My dear boy, you really haven’t been paying attention have you? That seems to be another problem you have…. or maybe it’s just another ‘that’s what I want it to be so that’s the way it is’ moments for you? Do remember what I said about those shades of gray ‘eh?

Getting over that sort of thing can only benefit you Jeff, really, you’ll be a better and happier person if you at least try, will you, will you try for us Jeff? Is there anything at all that I, or balbulican, or treehugger, or Lily could do to help that along? We would ya know, really, we would.

I do not blame George Bush and American foreign policy for terrorism in general, although it must be said that in recent years both have been responsible for an increase in terrorist attacks – hard to argue that one dude, their own people say it’s so.

What is happening in Iraq is 100% the responsibility of George Bush and American foreign policy, ya can’t argue that one either, they started it. If the US hadn’t invaded and occupied the place we wouldn’t be having this discussion at all would we?

… and all those little pieces of flesh and blood that you seem to think are “worth it” would be walking around and going about their daily business wouldn’t they?

Do ya think I’ll be buying a plane or bus ticket anytime soon Jeff, or should we consider that you have conceded the point?

There is some similarity between the photo in this article and the sidebar photo. I guess it’s the expression of your eyes… and the love for America.

  13. balbulican on October 25th, 2006 at 6:53 am

Sigh. We already have a resident troll, Shlemazl, and we weren’t looking for a village idiot. There’s a couple of slots available for “intelligent exponent of conservative views”, but you’re not doing very well on the audition.

  14. stageleft on October 25th, 2006 at 8:45 am

Why gee shlemazl, how very witty and clever of you, how shall I ever recover from such a devastating comment [blink] – ok, recovered.

BTW, I think America is essentially a great place, I grew up right next door, spent a fair bit of time in Maine during the teen-age years, I have family that lives in the states, and even }}}}}gasp{{{{ friends there – some of whom are }}}}}double gasp{{{{{ Republicans.

My issues are with their government, and those people who have their eyes shut to what is going on because they are either too damned afraid or too damned lazy to open them.

Applications for those “intelligent exponent of conservative views” positions remain open – gonna try for one of them?

  15. JimBobby on October 25th, 2006 at 9:25 am

(Whooee!) The more I see of comments by the likes of Jeff and Shlemazl, the more I see debate and engagement as pointless. These are people who steadfastly stay the course, regardless of reality. They refuse to concede that the reversal of philosophy — pre-emptive war — by the current US administration has had the exact opposite effect of what was expected.

The terrorists who Bush, et al, are fighting have increased their numbers and their capacity for destruction. American military personnel are dying at a higher rate than at any time since the beginning of the invasion. Only 19% of Americans believe the US is winning the war. 57% of Americans want their troops out now. Even GWB is likening the quagmire to the Vietnam debacle.

The neo-con strategy has failed and failed miserably. US Republicans and their backers here in Canada have lost all claims to holding the moral high ground. Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo, secret prisons scattered around the globe, rendition of innocent suspects to torture at the hands of brutal regimes, cover-ups of reprehensible sexual exploitation by members of Congress are all set against a backdrop of posturing: “Mission Accomplished,” “Stay the Course,” “No Cut and Run,” “Family Values” and a host of other neatly packaged, sound-byte-sized, bumper-sticker-ready slogans aimed at what they perceive as an ignorant electorate.

The desperation of the Bush regime is becoming one of the few areas where transparency exists, albeit unintentional. The increased activity and hyperbole by Bush apologists, including paid military personnel who comment on liberal blogs, is being clearly recognized for the pathetic attempt that it is to influence public opinion.

The desperate neo-cons are spinning in circles and lashing out in all directions in a futile effort to prevent the truth from affecting the public’s growing disenchantment with being lied to by its own leaders. The truth has been coming out since 9/11. With the all-too-obvious failures of the Bush team now too difficult to obscure with slogans, yellow ribbons and bumper stickers, Mr. & Mrs. American Voter are finally waking up to the fact that they’re being governed by ideological incompetents.

    Yours grammatically,
    James Robert

Blink. Okay, who are you, and what have you done with Jim Bobby?

  17. JimBobby on October 25th, 2006 at 10:07 am

(Whooee!) JimBobby has been getting some flack out in the blogosphere. While he feels he is read and comprehended by enlightened individuals, like StageLeft, Balbulican, TreeHugger and other left-leaning commenters and bloggers, he has been largely ignored or actively denigrated by many on the right. “Hick schtick,” they call it.
James Robert will be filling in for JimBobby for at least today. Another of JimBobby’s “friends,” Al Terego may pop in with his brand of commentary, as well.

    Respectfully,
    James Robert

Well, any friend of Jim Bobby is a friend of the Bunker. Set a spell, James. Take your shoes off. Let Al know he’s welcome too. I believe he’s related to the fellow used to live at the old De Plume place…Norm, I think his name was.

  19. JimBobby on October 25th, 2006 at 10:19 am

Thank you for the kind welcome, sir.

Stageleft, you blah blah blahed alot in your response to me but you never answered my question: Who else do you blame for terrorist activities besides George Bush and American foreign policy?

Are the terrorists, themselves, actually responsible for any of their own terrorism?
