I guess I am reading too many conservative blogs these days. I could have sworn that predictions such as this one, which has come to fruition, were described as “alarmist” on a regular basis. How many more studies does it take before the climate change science is not widely ignored or scoffed at in a purely partisan fashion? It is mind boggling to say the least.

Oops, thank you EP, I will corrected the typo.
Look Global warming is a liberal myth, FACT! And even if Global warming is happening it is a natural cycle of the Earth, FACT! And even if man is causing to the global warming, there is nothing we can do to stop it FACT! Also, Global warming will good for the Environment. FACT!
Can’t you stupid fucking lefties get the facts right and stop changing your stories all the time!
I’m the Wingnuterer, FACT!
All it will take for right-wingers to come around on climate change is the eventual flooding and decimation of the continental US (mostly Florida, but only half of them are Good American Patriots anyways). Once that kicks in, they’ll say “there was no way to know”, and then use it as an excuse to invade someone.
“I for one, after having studied this for 20 years, have never seen anything like this before,”
Wow. 20 whole years.
Uhh…yeah. The man has studied climate change for twenty years.
Was that sarcastic interpolation supposed to suggest that twenty years of study is worthless?
Oh, I forgot. Knowledge and experience don’t count. Sorry.
No, the fact he hasn’t observed current climate conditions before in the 20 years of his human life span is a worthless observation.
ANy comments on the study itself or its implications lRC? Or is this tortured logic day for you?
A lot of scientists actually incorporate from before their own professional lives into their analyses, lrC. It’s a new thing.
The good of the global economy on the one hand…..life as we know it on the other hand…..its so hard to choose these days.
C’mon IrC…I really am interested in your opinions on this subject.
Whooee! Warmin’ schwarmin’! September’s here an’ we been gettin’ a few chilly nights ’round these parts. An’ who needs polar bears, anyways? I sure as hell don’t want one movin’ in next door.
I seen where the meltin’ is releasin’ a whole whack o’ CO2 carbon dioxide gas an’ that means the global warmin’ oven’s gonna warm up all the faster. At least GM’s got a fuel cell car on the drawin’ board. That’ll save us, fer sure. An’ King Steve’s gal Rona’s workin’ on sum great ideas that’re gonna lead t’ bold new effective policies way better’n that unworkable ol’ Kyoto deal.
I don’t reckon the whole world’s gonna go fer a shit before I croak in 15 or 20 years, if I’m lucky. I jest got me a grandson ’bout a month back an’ I sure would like the world t’ last fer his lifetime.
Yores trooly,
JimBobby

Yes. Because of what and where the ice is, it tends to implicate warmer temperatures in the surrounding water, not the atmosphere. Having a rough idea of the vast difference between the amount of heat retained by oceans (relatively very large) and atmosphere (relatively little), it seems likely that either the oceans have been taking up a much larger amount of solar radiation than anyone’s been speculating about to date, or there are other mechanisms in play.
So you initially disparage the study, and now you’re trying to explain its findings away?
Gather round, folks - this is how they manage to keep that world view intact.
You obviously don’t see the implications, but if your natural inclination is to disregard everything that doesn’t exactly fit your chosen narrative in a way you can clearly comprehend, I understand. If the oceans are that much warmer, it has to be explained before we can presume to do anything about it or even if we can do anything about it. Either something else (other than GHG-retained solar energy) is producing heat, or the oceans have been taking up and retaining heat due to GHG effects much faster than anyone seems to have anticipated, or at least much faster than any findings as such have been widely publicized. That would tend to reinforce the urgency of doing something about C02 emissions. I haven’t discarded any explanations yet; you seem to be willing to do so rather readily.
What does it mean, this “explained away”? The point of gathering data and forming hypotheses is to explain what is observed. Is the “away” part your method of indicating that you find the possibile explanations politically inconvenient?
I think just the body heat alone of all the billions on the planet (including non-human animals) is bound to cause global warming. And all us aging women with hot flashes are probably what’s really responsible for the melting Arctic ice. I’d continue in this vein, but I have to go stick my head in the freezer.
Our household is, like, SO there.
