According to Maryann Cusimano Love (a professor of politics at The Catholic University of America), while many view religion as “one of the chief bad guys” behind current conflicts, religions can be “incredible tools” for peace.

Really, religions, monotheistic religions at that, can be incredible tools for peace? Possibly they can, but it hasn’t happened too darned often in the few centuries that the monotheists have been kicking around has it?

Remember the Crusades? What brought that on? Could it have possibly been one monotheistic religion setting up camp on a spot that another monotheistic religion considered their holy ground?

How about the Inquisition? Wasn’t that the one where one of the monotheistic religions decided that speaking, or even thinking, contrary to their particular dogma was worthy of torture and death?

If I recall correctly the witch burnings were a less than peaceful, oh, religion was most certainly an incredible tool during those times, it sure was, it was a ready made tool for getting people tied up to poles in the town square and set on fire.

Ah, and who can possibly forget the bringing of this incredible tool to “the new world”, oh how peace and happiness reigned in what is now the Dominican Republic when Columbus held sway in the first Christian city of the new world… how many other tools could have seen a woman paraded around nude on a donkey after having her tongue cut out for insulting him?

A bit later on this incredible tool was brought to North America, and in even recent history (my generation to be precise) it was used to demonize entire cultures and bring little aboriginal kids into line (while bringing no small amount sexual relief to more than a few of it’s leadership).

I recall a line from (I believe) The Da Vinci Code that goes something like, “as long as there has been a one true god people have been killing in his name”.

- no truer words were ever spoken.
