Just wait for the scisms, as town council try to decide on the level of orthodoxy, or the near civil war when a bunch of Opus Dei move in and demand every body flog themselves.
Will the school board be forced to teach creationism, flat world, how about mandatory fish fridays, fines for missing mass? Maybe they will rule that the Papal bull that gave the Americas to Spain and Portugal still stands. Then they could have the Spanish Iquisition.

It would be interesting to see what would happen if some abortion rights activists, masquerading as devout Catholics, bought property in Ave Maria, then set up a clinic.
So long as the abortion clinic owned the property, I don’t think Monaghan would have any legal recourse.

It seems to me that the costs and profit ratio just wouldn’t be worth it. So, who cares?

I’m not sure abortion rights activists would be concerned about profitability, Ian. They’d be trying to prevent the setting of a precedent, the precedent that an individual can create a fiefdom on U.S. soil, and proclaim as law that abortion cannot occur within the boundaries of that fiefdom.
Now, if Monaghan has thought this through, he’ll probably retain ownership of all property within his little city-state. So long as he leases every square inch, and doesn’t surrender title to anyone, my scenario doesn’t have much of a chance of beoming reality.
