– it couldn’t get any stranger…. bikers protesting anti-gay religious nutbars at military funerals. Good on ‘em says I!

Phelps should thank his lucky stars they don’t take the bull by the horns and kick his extremist a$$.

    Is there even a word for Phelps’ particular flavour of wacko?

    I believe there is no *word*, Cygne; but that the Stooges have a couple of illuminating *actions*.

    That is just nasty. How can those people (the “religious” protesters) even begin to think their attitude is Christian? It’s shit like this that just baffles me about religion. I have to say that the longer I live, the more I think that organized religion is responsible for a great deal of the evil in the world.

    Any organization with resources, power and a hierarchy will attract people who like resources, power and hierarchy. Like any human institution, organized religions create wonders and horrors. We need to be honest about both.

    But don’t you dare try and stereotype all Christians based on just this group. That doesn’t work. Only with Muslims.

    No one could possibly stereotype all Christians based on Phelps’ group. I seem to remember reading somewhere that he pretty much had to create his own “Baptist” church because the real Baptists wouldn’t have anything to do with him.

    – and no one should stereotype Muslims based on their extremists and nutbars – but it’s happening isn’t it?

  8. lrC on February 22nd, 2006 at 3:58 pm

    There isn’t exactly a rash of Muslim stereotyping going on; Muslims seem to be able to go about their business throughout North America without much more fear of being victimized than any other identifiable group. Gay people are probably still more at risk of being swarmed and beaten, for example. It is the extremists and nutbars who are stereotyped as a group; we are no longer able to see the nuances and shades and degrees between extremists and nutbars.

    lrC, check out recent posts on SDA and Celestial Junk explaining that non-violent Muslims are just as culpable as “good Germans”. Seems to be the new nasty meme du jour.

    The fact that some conservative posters are starting to openly worry about Sharia Law coming to Canada speaks volumes. All Muslim’s are getting painted with the same brush – only Orthodox Muslims would want Sharia Law. I would argue that most Muslims come to Canada and the west to escape Sharia Law, not have it imposed on them here.

    There isn’t exactly a rash of Muslim stereotyping going on;

    I’d suggest you listen to the radio, watch a bit of TV, and check yourself closely for personal bias IrC.
