Just when you thought it couldn’t get any more astounding [updated @ 9:48 to include deja vu]
American military officers will inspect hundreds of detention centers and embed with Iraqi police commando units and other Interior Ministry forces to try to halt widespread abuses uncovered by raids on two Iraqi-run detention centers in Baghdad in the last month, the American ambassador pledged Tuesday.
That should make them feel much better about themselves again ‘eh? They get to investigate what Iraqis are doing to Iraqis instead of what they are doing in the same arena.
I want to know what some of this “severe” torture the article mentions is so that I can compare what that word means when it’s used to describe what others do?
Update:
At least 120 abused prisoners have been found in two detention facilities run by the Shiite-led Interior Ministry, the U.S. ambassador said Tuesday. Iraqi officials say allegations of mistreatment have been exaggerated.

“I want to let the Iraqi people know that we are very committed to looking at all of the facilities,” Khalilzad said. “This is unacceptable for this kind of abuse to take place.”
– sound even vaguely familiar?

Okay, and if they had ignored it, done nothing, the outrage would be even bigger. Yes, they need to clean their own house, but if American troops are in charge of training Iraqi troops, we need to oversee that as well.
