Yes, it stands for Completely Stupid Idea this time as well - what were they smoking when the CPoC talking points planning committee decided that the same sex marriage [non]issue would give Harper any help what - so - ever in this election.
The key to this election for all parties is the youth vote; if either the Liberals or the CPoC can motivate this generally non-voting resource the task of forming a majority government is going to be a hell of a lot easier for them.
For those who don’t have a lot of experience with Canadian youth let me remind you that the vast majority of them do not care whether a person decides to date, have sex with, marry, and/or set up a home with, someone of their own sex, or the opposite sex - it is a non issue.
What is an issue with them is someone being discriminated against based on who they date, have sex with, marry, and/or set up a home with.
Given that there are no arguments against same sex marriage other than religious ones Harper has done himself no favours (have I used the word stupid yet? Did it have an uppercase “S”?) - as a matter of fact he has only reenforced the intolerant religious fundie conservative perception…. and in case folks are not aware of it, Canadian youth are not impressed with that shite either.
The Martin camp has been handed a whole new box of ammunition to use on the campaign trail, can you hear the ‘And the Conservative Party of Canada will take away the existing legal rights of minorities in Canada’?
CSI

Yep, Harper is like a dog with a bone on this issue. He just won’t give it up.
The CPC are failing at the very basic level of political communications on this one. It is a given that the media will hound him on this. Instead of giving answers like, “I support a free vote if the issue comes up again”, that allow it to linger and be front page news, they really need to craft a short sound bite that will put the issue to bed. Something like “Parliament has spoken on this issue, we are moving forward with our positive agenda (insert policy talking points one, two and three)for the future of this country.
Otherwise, they are headed for another stumbling campaign and possibly an unfortunate repeat of last time. Robert sums this one up perfectly Here:
