As Kashechewan [not so slowly] fades from the spotlight in the wake of government promises to rebuild the community that seem, for now anyway, to have assuaged public outrage, other stories remain a long way under Canadian mainstream radar, waiting, if they are lucky enough, for the media explosion that may effect change.
Stories like Inuit people unable to find their relatives who were taken away, died, and were buried in other places, health issues in Nunavut, social issues running rampent in Northern Quebec, a general Aboriginal arctic housing crisis that just gets worse, and Canada looking to dump more garbage on Aboriginal lands against the wishes of the people.
– sad isn’t it?
The government continues to ignore those communities just below the media radar. It is a story that must be told yet no media has taken it seriously.
Imagine, Canadian communities requiring the use of the armed forces to deliver clean water. It has not happened except the in this case. Hundreds of remote reserves have these water problems due in large part to federal neglect.
Perhaps we need an earthquake in Canada to get action.
