Yeah, I’d be “looting” too. In fact, if I didn’t have insurance, like most of the poor in N.O., I’d be swiping big ticket items too. Selling a TV, perhaps at a later date, might slightly offset the losses. I sure as hell wouldn’t trust Bush and Co. to help me out.
Welcome Back V, I’m not sure what images are in the cycle on US television - the US news casts that I have seen showed one instance of dry goods theft…. three people slogging through the water, one of them with a stack of cloths on his shoulder. Everything else has been what looks like food and necessities.
That being said situations like this bring out the best and the worst in people. Where the comforts of life and society (at whatever level people are used to enjoying them) disappear and survival becomes an issue more basic (and base) human natures and instincts emerge.

The problem in N.O. SL is that 30 - 40% percent of the people live below the poverty line. When told to leave I presume many did not have the means to do so. The horror of the situation creates a perfect opportunity for some to loot for survival and others for less sincere reasons. When you have that many people in dire straights to begin with it is not hard to see how the law of the jungle takes over in a crisis.
Furthermore, local, state and federal authorities have fruitlessly tried to put law and order above search and rescue making the poor even more desperate. Feed the stranded people in a timely fashion and half of the looting problem disappears immediately.

Unfortunately, people aren’t just taking food, and that’s what’s downright shitty. People are stealing sneakers and stereos and looting slot machines in casinos.
That’s just wrong.
Food? I can easily forgive it. Hell, it’s not like the owner of the store is gonna get back and find all his food there and ready to sell.
