Tuesday, May 31 2005, 6:52PMSuicide among natives across Canada continues to be a serious problem.
For the third year in a row the Youth Suicide Prevention Walkers are passing through the Sault and Algoma. Today they paid a visit to St. Bernadette Elementary school.
The Youth Suicide Prevention Walkers entry into the sacred circle at the Gdi-Niweninaa Pow Wow at St. Bernadette’s Elementary made a strong statement. The group from British Columbia represents the fight against what has become an epidemic in aboriginal communities. Suicide rates in Nunavut Territory are seven times the national average while native men aged 15 to 24 are four times likely to take their own life.
The ceremony held at St. Bernadette was important to give non-natives exposure to the culture of a large group of their peers. It’s a chance for natives to be proud of their heritage.
The Youth Suicide Prevention Walk wraps up June 21st in Ottawa. For more information log on to www.theyouthsuicidepreventionwalk.com
