I know that art is important, I know that it is important to support art, and the arts, and I know that we’d live in a pretty darned drab society if we didn’t do that.

On the flip side of the coin I was forwarded an email from a Municipal Recreation Co-Ordinator in Nunavut yesterday that stated that their community had recently had to deal with multiple youth suicide attempts, didn’t have enough money to fund recreation programs for youth to access, and was turned down for funding for a wellness type program to help address the issue of suicide.

$3.2 million can accomplish a lot of things - someday maybe I’ll be able to figure out if, compared to the situation in a small Nunavut Hamlet, a 9.25-metre bronze spider outside the National Gallery was worth it…. until then I will remain conflicted.
